When did you last pay attention to the UK Music Top 40?

Was that released to stop one of the x factor winners from getting Christmas number 1?

Yes.

I think “Smells Like Teen Spirit” got to #2 the year before via similar publicity.

The irony of “don’t vote for X-Factor, vote who we say instead” is not lost on me.

Honesty never

I remember TOTP being on when I was a small kid very very early 90s but didn't really care.

My Dad used to record on vhs tapes songs off MTV when he went home(we didn't have sky) so I grew up more with my parents putting on them tapes so everything from The Doors, Dire Straits, Hendrix etc or there recordings of live Floyd concerts

I didn't listen to that much music seriously till just before my 20s and only really found my music in my early 20s. Everything changed when I listened to Gary Moore on night at work

Anyway Some Might Say is the last great number 1

Have you hidden the title of the song from this sentence?

Early '90's for me. Stopped listening once I'd hit my late teens and discovered sex, drugs and rock n' roll (by which I mean porn mags,  shite cannabis resin and Jimi Hendrix's music - of which only the latter, thankfully, has stayed with me).

I actually subjected myself to listening to the Top 40 on Spotify at work  the other week. Everything sounded too well-drilled, over-produced and slick. The Kids are no fucking fun these days.

Honestly no idea.

I remember when i was younger and i would hear people say they didnt know what was number 1, or didnt listen to the charts. It seemed so bizarre to me. I couldnt comprehend how you could not know what was the number 1 song in the land.

I dont remember making any effort to know it as a kid, it was just something that you knew. Perhaps it is the streaming stuff or the loss of top of the pops like people have mentioned, but it seemed to be a much bigger thing years ago. The take that vs blur stuff, who would be Christmas number one. It was genuinely news worthy stuff, certainly to those putting the news on at least.

I do wonder if kids are the same now, wondering how old people like me cant know that Cardi B is number 1.

I'm happy to be corrected but I'm pretty sure you're wrong.

There seems to be some debate whether Please Please Me got to number 2 or number 1 in February.
