A few extra million on the fee, plus a larger signing on fee, larger agents fees, a substantially larger salary... It all adds up.

Brainier folks than I can speculate whether the value of the pound might also be significant, but paying in sterling might be preferable to Euros at the mo. I dunno.

My thoughts? Fuck it - I’d prefer Jota and Thiago over Werner on his own.

*I know Mendes is no pussy cat, but compared to certain clubs he doesn’t have a parasitic hold on a large proportion of our squad. I’m quite sure he’s capable of rinsing some clubs for all they’re worth, but he doesn’t have that bargaining power with us and we’ve got Michael Edwards.

I honestly just think Edwards prefers to play things safe.  We didn’t sign Werner because the everything was up in the air and it was time limited because of the clause.  Now things have settled back down they know what they can spend and have had offers to players they will not have been sure would come in.  It’s just when you look at it now it looks like a stinker and we should have been a bit bolder.  You’re right though about the other costs but they wouldn’t have been that much over Jota compared to the level of quality you would be getting.  I think Werner will keep Lampard in a job.

Thiago was always coming.  I’ve just watched some highlights video of him again.  The fella is an absolute madness.

If it’s true Werner‘s fee needed to all be paid up front and we’re paying less than £4M up front this season for Jota, that’s mystery solved. The total amounts being roughly similar is one thing. Needing to find over £40M more up front this summer is very different. The deals for Thiago and Jota all seem to be about a very small up front fee and favourable terms. Plus Jota seems to be more adept at backing up Mo and Sadio than Werner would and that’s more of a priority when we have Minamino backing up Bobby.

Didn’t Dave say that part of the problem with the Werner deal was that his agent wanted a £12M backhander?

I’m guessing the entire package just made it unpalatable to us. If he waited then maybe, but as an overall deal and over the time we’ve done the deal (like Thiago) it might well work out that we got both players for what Werner would have cost.

Fellow insomniacs and pissheads I’ve found a Wolves forum. About to dive in and see what they say about him.

The Wolf In The North

Has a lot to say
I can't agree with the majority of you, sorry.

Jota brought more than goals and assists, he provided attitude and aggression. He was an essential link between the lines. He is a massive loss. Massive.

And for those quoting stats, I will bet my **** he scores and assists 15+ goals for Liverpool this season, and will improve out of sight.

He was a ****ing diamond.

I'm gutted

Hmmm..

From the Wolves forum:

«I like Jota but he is extremely inconsistent, and has some poor finishing and decision making. The game last season where he missed a fairly easy chance but then scored a great goal was a good summary. Or he'll have the most awful game you can imagine and then score a hat-trick next game.

On his day he's unplayable, but 9/10 you'll get him running into blind alleys.

He is a good player and has done a lot for us, but isn't a top player. One of the players I would say we need to upgrade on if we want to kick on.»

This is basically to a tee what Saints fans used to say about Mane. Not only that, the inconsistency shouts always baffle me. Like he played for Wolves, maybe the 7th best team in the league, if I'm being generous. Did their supporters really expect him to be great every game? He scored 18, 10 and 16 goals. Were they expecting 20's and 30's? It's not like he's getting service from the likes of Messi. He's playing for fucking Wolves, ffs.
