Chelsea (A) 20/9/20 - Premier League

Werner is basically the perfect striker to take advantage of our current defensive weaknesses but besides that Chelsea didn't look great. The shape looked a bit off and that will take time to figure out. If we're on our game, we'll win.

And if we get beat by a team that is integrating a bunch of players and is trying to figure it out, we might actually be in trouble. I just hope Silva isn't ready to start this one. He's a rare defender who can handle our forwards 1v1.

Last season's fixture took place pretty much a year to the day since this game. Some shite featuring Ed Sheeran was No1 in the charts. He could spend 30 seconds just farting into a mic, and blerts up and down the land would still buy it and stream it to get it to No1. Anyway, we won 2-1 thanks to Trent's peach of a free kick (see above) and Bobby's bullet header from a free kick.

Like ourselves, Chelsea have been ever-presents in the top flight since the Premier League era (or football itself, if you believe Sky propaganda) began. Stamford Bridge was not a happy hunting ground. It took 12 attempts to register our first win there, on January 7th 2004. It was the start of Cheyrou's purple patch, and probably the moment Abramovich realised that all the millions he'd spent on transfers after arriving the previous summer were wasted while he had Ranieri in charge. The Italian got them a second-place finish in the league, 11 points behind unbeaten Arsenal, and the semi-finals of the Champions League where they were beaten by eventual runners-up Monaco.

When Cheyrou found a bit of form, Michael Andrews and Gary Jules were top of the charts with their cover of Tears For Fears' 'Mad World'. It was a mad world indeed when Cheyrou briefly morphed from hide-in-the-corner-afraid-of-his-own-shadow flyweight into a cross between Zidane and Papin.

We need to get to grips with the defensive side of our game sharpish. We've been flaky for months now, and it was also in evidence in the reverse fixture at the tail end of last season. It might be entertaining for the neutral but on balance I prefer the mentality monster approach of getting the job done with minimum fuss. A return to defensive organisation and concentration would be most welcome in this game.

I like how you reference that Tears for Fears cover being number one but not that the country went to war. A music fan?

No more than usual. The music stuff is this year's theme. Last year's theme was acronyms which went very well but got tedious very quickly.

He only mentions unusual things; we're ALWAYS going to fucking war.

True.

A win against the rent boys on their own patch this early in the season will do wonders for us and will certainly dent fat Frank's bubble we will obviously have to improve on last Saturday but its doable imo bring it on Reds

That’s what I was tying to say, but you did it better, thanks mate.

If we turn up, focussed and keen, it’s game over for any other team, never mind a Chelsea team that’s struggling with their keeper and back four when they’re put under pressure.

Any drop off in intensity and concentration by us and we’re potentially in trouble against any other team, never mind a Chelsea team that has good quality attacking players.

Up to us then really, isn’t it.

This won’t be a dreary 0.0 thats for sure. They will definitely score at least 2, it’s a question of how many we get in response. I’m having £10 on 3.3

We will win this game.

we’re the reigning champions, we won there last year, and we’ll be better at the back, and put them back to where they belong, top 4 contenders.

This is the game that the team need IMO. They know against Chelsea they cant afford to be so sloppy as they have the players to punish us. 4 points from the next two games would be par IMO. Btw, Reece James is class. Interesting that they moved him to centre midfield in the second half.

I'd be very disappointed with 4 points. Win this and we're 6 clear of City before they have even kicked a ball. Already they will be playing with the knowledge any dropped points could be fatal. That pressure will suffocate them.
