I could never get past the unforgivable sin that was Shiny Happy People.

It was on a great album too, which makes it worse. But Monster was a fantastic album so they are forgiven.

New Adventures in Hi Fi is an absolutely brilliant album. My favourite REM album I know it inside out and back to front.

Yes it's very good, mate. Undertow, Leave, Be Mine. Great tracks. Probably a tad too long overall but very good nonetheless.

There's a great article about it here - https://www.stereogum.com/1898172/new-adventures-in-hi-fi-turns-20/franchises/reviews/the-anniversary/

I love that song. The lyrics are just wonderful, especially the parenthetical "this one laughing quietly underneath my breath". What a line.

The piano was supposedly the same one that was used to record the coda at the end of Layla (Derek and the Dominos). And the string arrangement was by John Paul Jones.

I remember when I worked in a record shop in the late 80’s. We had the record companies calling us and we discussed over the phone new upcoming bands, new releases, what records to get to the shop, how many etc, etc.

Pixies we slik more REM than Pixies, but a lot of those who came to the shop every day loved the Pixies.
