If there's no cut-off date and no restriction on genres then Hank Williams and the Drifting Cowboys should definitely be in it. Genius song-writing from Hank, the best Country and Western band ever by a mile and playing rock and roll nearly ten years before it was 'invented".

But wouldn't they be two separate entities?

Theres a bunch of older country who could/should make it - Buck Owens and the Buckaroos, Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys. Emmylou Harris' Hot Band are a couple for sure.

Someone already mentioned Bill Monroe.

The line-up changed regularly but they backed him for most if not all of his career. He wasn't a solo performer.

Yes, but when you say Hank Williams, you don't think of him and his backing group, same as with other similar big names.

Maybe but you could say the same about Hendrix, Bruce, Cash,Smokey Robinson, Tom Petty and others who should all be counted as bands or you're going to exclude music played by bands on the basis that they're really just backing bands.

Well, we did say the same, except maybe Hendrix. I don't know, there are always grey areas.

They had loads of writers, including Goffin/King, Boyce/Hart and of course Nesmith, Dolenz, Tork and Jones.

Stills and Young played on a few tracks.

I quite like the Monkees - but if they aren't playing the songs and aren't writing the songs then are they a band?

They played from the 3rd album onwards. They wrote songs. They were manufactured to start with then turned into an actual band.

Stephen Stills failed the audition.

I used to love the Monkees TV show. It used to be on summer holidays morning kids TV in the mid 80s. You wouldn't get that now would you? You don't get 20/30 year old shows on mainstream telly these day. I used to love the Addams Family, Sgt Bilko, Looney Tunes cartoons, all that jazz.
