I quite like Genesis but I love The Kinks. The Village Green Preservation Society is one of the great English rock albums, and the song Village Green is possibly THE quintessential English pop song. 

 

So, a close tie, but in the end the Kinks run out 3-1 winners.

Genesis absolutely belong here. How many bands or acts have been produced as a result of their existence? 

 

Four including Genesis that I can think of - Genesis, Mike & The Mechanics, Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins (although I much prefer his drumming to his singing). There could be more that I don't know of, but to say they don't belong here with the great British bands is a dubious claim. 

 

There are bands left out who should be here but there are other groups that would get hooked before them.

Well, there is always a certain flavor to alot of the old English prog groups but what I think is really hitting me - alot of records/bands I consider great were 50 years ago!! Literally. 

When I was 16 or 18 I never would dream of listening to songs/bands from the 1930's and 1940's. Hell back then the 50's were oldies.

So it makes sense that for people of a certain age there is a total disconnect to certain bands.

The Stooges are my favourite band of all time. First album came out over 50 years ago. The first Oasis album is over 25 years old now though. I just don't like Genesis.

Be hard pressed to find a finer song for a loved one lost than this, one of the greatest songs ever written
