Piper Alpha Disaster

32 years ago yesterday. 167 men. This documentary on it still haunts me. Imagine having to make a decision between risking staying on a burning oil rig or jumping into the ice cold North Sea in the middle of the night.

I remember it well Stig. Was working onshore for BP exploration at the time at 25 years of age .

I saw grown men twice my age ( some huge hardy construction types) visibly upset. I remember a lot of them were very very angry and saying something like this was inevitable.

Heavy mate. Met a few myself through the years, also a few lads off a few ship disasters and the terror of being in the middle of the sea .... fuck that. You can see it in their eyes, and we are talking hard men.

I watched the first half of this last night - I was staggered to read they were performing upgrades while continuing to process oil.

Fuck that shit.

I was working for Deborah Scaffolding at the time and it was horrifying to think of those in that nightmare scenario, we were all asked to donate £10 each to a fund which we gladly did thinking it could of easily been yourself or a mate.

I won't forget that.
