Report: Werner transfer takes another step closer to fruition

Recommended Posts

The much discussed transfer of Timo Werner to Liverpool has taken another positive step according to reports.

The RB Leipzig striker continued his scintillating season on Sunday by scoring his third hat trick of the campaign in a 5-0 rout against Mainz.

The Mirror reported that Jürgen Klopp held a virtual meeting with the 24 year-old during lockdown and well connected German journalist Rafael Honigstein confirmed that plans are in place but the Covid-19 pandemic have made things a little bit more uncertain in a financial sense.

“I think it depends on what Liverpool want to do because Werner's been on the record saying he wants to go there and he is available because of a release clause which at the worst would cost about £55m.

“So far Liverpool have been linked closely and there has been a meeting between him and Jurgen Klopp, at least a virtual one over the last few weeks.

“I think they're a bit hesitant to pull the trigger because they haven't quite figured out how much of a financial problem the coronavirus will present itself to football, coming over the next month in the Premier League.

"I think he's waiting for things to fall into shape and it could be that the transfer window is much later than usual."

“This kind of deal would have been announced in April/May, this time it could be August or September, but I still think there's a very strong chance he'll end up at Liverpool."

The summer transfer targets of Liverpool have been something of much discussion during this halt to the season.

While the name of Werner has been extremely prominent, so too has Adama Traore with Klopp a known admirer describing him as “unplayable in full flight” and Andy Robertson recently saying that the Wolves winger has been his toughest opponent this season.

“Traore this season ripped me apart, to be fair."

“He’s ridiculous. Without a doubt [he’s the fastest in the league].

"I think he could give most Premier League defenders a 15-yard start and he’d still win the race.

Club legend Graeme Souness said in his Sunday column that Traore is the most intriguing player in the Premier League.

“Traore has improved and let’s hope he keeps on improving because he gets you on the edge of your seat.

“At the moment I would say he is, pretty much, unplayable. I’ve said it now a couple of times and it is still true.

“He is now not only a winger anymore, he keeps the ball, holds the ball and sets up goals, obviously. That makes it so difficult, each ball you lose is 100 per cent a counter-attack and half a goal.

Music to my ears.

I know the current money side of stuff could hold it back, but IMO, €60m for Germany’s #9, who plays for a title & champions league chasing team, who is going to score 30+ goals this season, is still an absolute steal.

Yes just saw his stats on Sky, might start to get excited about this now, especially if Klopp has had a virtual meeting with him.

Signing someone of Werners ilk is a real "fuck you" to the rest of the league imo.

Because we already have the best forward line in the league, possibly even the world, and just for the sheer fun of it, we've added a 24 year old hot shot to the mix.

Firmino dropping into no 10 spot?

id sy its simply competition, plus the fact we have the African nations cup coming up. Providing that happens of course, but if it does, we'd be without Mane and Salah for a good chunk of a busy period.

Think it would be an option against the more negative sides in the league but he’d likely be a rotation option as we don’t actually seem to rotate the front line unless one is injured.

I assume origi and Shaq would be sold if he came in? Minamino (if he’s as good as the hype), Werner, salah, mane, Firmino is a good set up front.

Hearing that @aRdja is now advising Michael Edwards. Presented a 312 page dossier on Traore. Moves for a pair of Harrys in Winks and Maguire imminent.

I think Traore is extremely limited.

Conversely, I also think that if Klopp wanted him that he'd turn him into one of the most potent attackers in the world.

Werner just feels like it will happen. Too much smoke for there to be no fire. I’d have said 90% chance, pre corona. Probably more like 75% now but still more likely than not.

He’ll come, bed in for half a season, then we should see him make a decent contribution.

I suspect one of Salah or Mane will be off by the end of next season so makes sense to bring a potential replacement in now.

If it’s not him it’s Sancho (some smoke, not enough for a fire).

Or Mbappe (highly unlikely, we can but dream).

If we buy Werner and later sell either Salah or Mané, there will be another signing.

You may well be right. It wouldn’t be a complete surprise to see both Werner and Sancho come through the door with this possibility in mind. Succession planning at its finest.

Definitely not this year, if Werner is signed he adds to the front players rather than replaces anyone next season. Any signing after that would definitely have to be a replacement.
