Getting back to the original post/question.

 

I'm ambivalent largely, but I saw a Tweet from a chap I follow who is Norwegian, and his message was simply that on this day Norway was stopping to celebrate freedom, and the Norwegian lads who fought for that 75 years ago.

 

They weren't celebrating in Norway, it was a remembrance event.  Whereas in this country, there's some military fetishism that encourages us all to have a party, like we 'won' something.

 

Yes, the people who fought 75 years ago would have celebrated, they won their freedom.  And as well as laugh, they'd have been bawling their eyes out at the magnitude of their losses, both in lives lost, and economically. 

 

If anything, we should have had a joint event with Russia, America, China, and everyone else who fought the axis of evil.  All our flags flying, remembering what we achieved together.

 

But, no.  Massive union jacks, and people commonly saying 'Victory OVER Europe'.  And you see how quickly things can change, how history can be rewritten, if you don't pull people up on these things.
