Liverpool are keen on beating Premier League rivals to the signing of Napoli striker Dries Mertens in the summer.

The Belgian international is out of contract in June and Newcastle and Chelsea are just two of a number of clubs which have registered an interest in the 32 year-old.

The Blues are said to be very keen with Frank Lampard reportedly having a number of discussions with Mertens.

But Football 365 (via TuttoMercatoWeb) reported that the Reds are very keen on the veteran and are offer him a three-year contract.

Mertens has been in terrific form for Genaro Gattuso’s side this season scoring 12 goals in 29 games.

In the Champions League, Mertens has been elite, scoring six goals in the competition which included goals against the Reds both home and away as well as against Barcelona in the first leg of their last 16 tie.

Jürgen Klopp is looking to boost his backup forward options and ease the load on the front three of Mo Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane.

If the Reds do sign Mertens, he will have to become accustomed to one of the iconic trademarks of the club.

That being the This is Anfield sign.

It was something that he commented on before Liverpool played Napoli in the crucial Champions League group game in 2018.

“My strongest memory is that they have a sign saying ‘This is Anfield’ and everyone was talking about it, so I was thinking it’s very big, you know.

“I came through the tunnel and I asked, ‘Where is the thing?’ and they said you missed it and I hadn’t noticed it.

“So, in the second half, I’m looking at this small thing and asking, ‘Is this so special?’”

We all know the answer to that, and if Dries scores a few winners for the Reds in front of the Kop, all will be forgiven.

I'm just not arsed about signings. All I want is to finish the season. Anything else and signings or next season I can't muster up any enthusiasm for. If this is voided so is my interest it would all just completely lose validity. Oligarchs and oil states have been killing the validity for years but this is the game ender for me.
