I got an indication yesterday of one of the reasons the Left is fucked. I was on the march against the Arms Fair which stopped for speakers at the Metropolitan Cathedral. Some decent speakers, too. The reasons for wanting the arms fair cancelled touch on a lot of the things that are wrong with the way this country is run - our economy, our foreign policy, our policies against asylum seekers, our inaction on climate change, our undemocratic and corrupt system of governance, etc. - so it's obvious that different people on the march were there with different priorities, coming from different perspectives, but arriving at the same conclusion: that the arms fair should be cancelled. It's called solidarity.

The way solidarity works is you focus on what you have in common and you work towards that goal. But that's not good enough for some cunts. They think they know better. There was a tiny handful of people (from some "Ooh, look at me, I'm more Socialist than you" group - I'm not sure which one) behind me at the Cathedral; a small enough group, but they had a mic and speaker, so they were able to loudly heckle the people on the platform. And didn't they just! All kinds of inane bullshit trying to drown out people they clearly didn't consider Leftie enough, including those famous Blaire sell-outs Dan Carden, Maxine Peake and John McDonnell.

It was like a real-life version of Twitter. I think it was Mark Steel who recently said that the problem is that people are looking for traitors, not converts. As long as we keep ourselves divided, we're fucked.

Here you go, hell of turnout that, well done.

If what you expect is a mixed bag, with a majority view supporting the idea of putting party divisions aside for a moment of basic human decency. (Actually, that is pretty much what I would expect.)

On the subject of Cameron/Osborne v Johnson in the ultimate cunty stakes, without going all Stronts here, imagine if Cameron/Osborne were not tied a little by a Con/Lib Dem  coalition in their first spell in charge and had won the EU referendum in their second, they would have then  done massive damage to lowest 40% of the most vulnerable people in Britain and fucking reveled in it.

On the other hand, if they had'nt gone into coalition with them, they would'nt have been able to do any of what they did. And we probably would'nt be in the shit we are in now with this absolute train wreck of a government.

If this anti-democratic shite is true, Starmer can fuck right off.

There is a whole lot of ifs and could doing a lot of carrying without any real evidence, Angry.

I agree with the sentiment though, but don't entirely trust Jones to not be putting out shady speculation as a way a putting the boot in before conference.

The only rule changes being mentioned at national level are arond CLP level, so far.

I think Owen is deriving ought from is here...

'The NEC reviewed the proposed constitutional amendments and agreed all the rule changes relating to the EHRC action plan. This is a positive step forward. Other changes discussed included plans to remove NEC by-elections in the CLP section. NEC CLP by-elections can be very expensive, especially compared to the other sections, which are less contested with smaller electorates. We discussed the use of the single transferable vote (STV) system in the CLP section. It is only used for the NEC CLP election as in order to get a proportional result you need at least five positions.

I suggested that if people would like to use STV in the local government NEC elections, we could create some new places for councillors on the NEC to make this work.

The NEC discussed rules for Local Government Committee composition and rules for CLP affiliations.

Discussions are ongoing for a number of rule changes. These changes will come back to the NEC during Labour Party conference for further discussion. The next NEC meeting will take place on Friday, a week from now.

The NEC discussed the policy around proscribed organisations and rules around auto-exclusion. There was consensus around the importance of how this policy is implemented and clarity of what demonstrates support for these organisations. NEC members asked for reassurance (which was given) that “support” is more than liking social media posts.'

Now of more interest is that they are scrapping FPTP for NEC which would go some way to explaining purging the agitators.

So this a move to introduce a less democratic voting system to ensure that an MP on the left of the party can never be elected leader without the permission of the right of the party?

Is this really what Starmer needs to be focusing on at the moment? We're not clear of the pandemic heading into winter and face a possible energy crisis but no let's rework the voting system in our favour.
