The Old Duke and Llandoger Trow on King Street are always worth a visit too.

I actually had a stroll through King Street yesterday mid morning on my way to a building site to have a chat with some youngsters who have just started their working life. Im just a go between but the first thing I drum into them is "you might find me to be a cunt, you might find that forman over there to be a cunt and throughout your working life you'll undoubtedly come across a boss who definitely a cunt so JOIN A FUCKING UNION"  like herding cats sometimes though, these kids are funny fuckers mind.

It is if you can get rid of enough members before conference and reduce the risk of Evens being given a vote of no confidence…

I don't think it is a no confidence vote . I could be wrong but I think he is still technically 'acting' Gen Sec as there has not been a conference in the interim to ratify the NEC decision.

Used to live in Soundwell, Nth Bristol for a short while years ago, strange city, I enjoyed it there though and met some cracking friends so I always enjoy my trips back there.

Now that is good pub. They reckon The Hatchet is the oldest pub in Bristol.

Back when we were at college it was a gay friendly pub. You used to get a weird mix of hairy gay bikers, lipstick lesbians and pisshead students in there on a Friday/Saturday evening taking advantage of the £1.50 a pint/bottle/double offer before we then went clubbing.

Had many a great night in there.

I went there about 4 years ago after seeing The Stranglers in the Academy. They had bread and chips out on the bar and a bloke had has laptop out playing punk classics through a speaker and everyone shouted their heads off till about 2am. Brilliant night.

You are correct, it’s a vote to not ratify the position previously agreed on, but is in effect a vote of no confidence.

All nonsense and ties in to the union stuff I was talking about previously around votes, representation and seats etc.

Massively destructive tit for tat stuff that is really setting us back, most likely consigning to irrelevance, for a very long time.

There aren’t many heroes on either side at the minute no matter where your tent is pitched.

As has been said on here before Labour need to bang the proportional representation drum. Votes should matter. I live in a Labour stronghold and to be honest they don't deserve my vote but I begrudge the fact my vote has no value. More voices should be heard than just Labour or Tory. Two parties who barely believe in democracy only that its their hands that can take hold of it.

I'll bet it's a damn sight better than any pub within safe staggering distance of Jack Jones House in Liverpool.

Used to drink on Commutation Row when I first left school , I think the main one was called the County ? One night an old Scottish drunk was on the way to the loo , stopped , patted me on the head and said ' You've got lovely currrly hair , I'd love to see you perform ' and then toddled off , leaving me to still have this thrown at me by mates 40 years later.

The hope for who though?

I think for those whose only interest was wrestling back control of the party the hope was that he would be an empty vessel. Job done.

Quite different for the membership of course. Didn't help that Long-Bailey was such an atrocious option from the left that many who might actually consider themselves socialists voted for Starmer.

The hope of the people described in your last paragraph, socialists with crap choices who probably went against their better judgement but hoped Starmer wouldn't let them down.

Has there ever been a good balance? I honestly don’t know, it’s worse now than it’s ever been though I think.

There have always been differences over policy but these seem to be fundamental divisions with one side constantly fighting the other.

It's a fucking shambles and I just cant see how anyone could unite them.

I don't understand the narrative that it is impossible to keep the two factions in some sort of  balance .

As far as I can see Starmer made a reasonable start and things were fairly quiet with the Left generally acknowledging his mandate and lookng for him to stick to his election promises , with the polls also looking healthy.

In my opinion he simply needed to keep a few token lefties in the cabinet , leave Corbyn in the long grass and either keep or pay lip service to the majority of his ten pledges , but at that point he decided that a full on war with the Left was what was required and started manoeuvering to get the few young left cabinet members to resign , removing the whip from Corbyn and being linked to the likes of Mandelson and Evans.

Time will tell if he has made the right call , but it's not looking particularly rosy and if I were a cynic I might think that the old centrists are not that bothered one way or the other and Starmer is probably perfect in that he seems happy to do their dirty work internally but has turned out that dull and inept politically that they can get him out pretty easily if needed.
