Genuine question. Faced with the findings of the report Starmer apologized on behalf of the Labour party. What should he have done ?

Come out and said “look it was a big load of nonsense we made up because we were terrified of a socialist becoming leader of the country so we had to do anything to stop it.  He’s out of power now so let’s just forget this ever happened.”

I've no problem with the Starmer apology, he seemed to be handling it well until he became all macho and boxed himself in, he gave the Israel mob the incentive to call the shots and they well and duly took it. He is now under their control.

Eloquent.

Fucking hell, man! He has been there for six months. Any suggestion he should or could have United the party is actually beyond ridicule. How? Answer that question and you’ve got my vote. How, in six months after inheriting a party waiting for a report on antisemitism, that is more divided than at any point in generations, was he meant to unite the party in six months? Not what he shouldn’t do, but what he should have done that would have United the party by now.

First step is cleaning up the mess he inherited. We now know that mess is unlawful discrimination and political interference. He drew a line in the sand for everyone to see and anybody who crosses it will meet the same fate. That’s not partisanship or forcing the left out or any other brainless claim that has been made today, it’s taking back control. That’s the second step to uniting.

Corbyn faced a report today that found the LOTO office unlawfully politically interfered and discriminated. Not one word of remorse. Under his leadership that happened and he chose to belittle the report and not to apologise.

The third step is painting the picture of the future and selling that well enough to the party and the country.

He has, in my view, shown proper leadership today. He faces this report, he met it head on with solutions, he apologised, and it allows the party to move on. Now Corbyn reacted disgracefully, and has been dealt with. This isn’t bad leadership, it’s leadership. Something the Labour Party hasn’t seen for a long time.

Every single bit of this.

Corbyn should have apologised today and said he got it wrong. I would have respected him then. Except he didn’t and now he’s out the party.

Angela Rayner said it best today when she said Corbyn had a blind spot on the issue.

I have found it particularly amusing that the hard left have been shouting the same old Blairite/Tory jibe at Starmer, when Corbyn spent half his political life voting against a Labour Government with the Tories. Funny that.

I can't believe the students that helped Labour win the last 2 elections won't vote for Starmer. We need to keep the Tories out of government. Starmer out!

I see.

So forget Scotland, working class people and students, Labour are going to win by winning the votes of middle class and more affluent voters. I wonder what sort of policies they will need to win those sort of people?

If you want to see what losing the youth/student vote looks like see Lib Dems in 2010 vs Lib Dems in 2015.

He clearly does have a blind spot. Him not apologising shows how he just isn’t pragmatic. The utter lack of contrition or responsibility today really was unbecoming. I have always said he’s a nice guy, but today wasn’t nice it was pretty shitty. When somebody independent releases a report that talks of the Leader of the Opposition’s office - your office, including you - and says there was discrimination and unlawful political interference, you say sorry. Even if you say some other things, you acknowledge that. He is boxed in on this though. He’s actually been quite selfish on this issue.

So Labour lost by almost 160 seats last time. Now they’ve somehow (though I can’t see how) alienated those groups, how many fewer seats will they get next time?

So, Jews? That’s not really an ‘Israel mob’, those are Jews. In what way do they now have control? This is icky.

By the way, before you try to paint me as some pro-Israeli propagandist, you might take a minute to search my ‘Israel’ and my handle. You’d be hard pushed to find anybody more vocal against the state of Israel over the last 10 years.

I don't think he's under anybodies control.

But, he's definitely made a rod for his own back with the Corbyn suspension (that wasn't his decision...or something or other...). That CAA complaint letter contains a few more examples of the same thing Corbyn was suspended for - questioning if people were using the antisemitism issue for political capital/exaggerating the true extent of the problem.

So, by suspending Corbyn, Starmer simply HAS to suspend these others too. In the interests of Rico's favourite C word (consistency, not cunt). If he doesn't suspend these others, the fallout could be damaging. The antisemitism campaign groups will be asking why they weren't suspended. The "left" will be asking why it was just Corbyn who was suspended and not others.

Then, if he does suspend them, there'll likely be questions of why he didn't suspend them beforehand, given that their complained of conduct is historical in some cases. There'll be opportunists on the right saying that he's only acted now as it was politically convenient to do so, but he was happy to tolerate this conduct in the past?

It'll be interesting to see how Starmer manages the can of worms that he's opened by suspending Corbyn.

On the issue of winning back votes in the north, I think his positioning as a remainer might make that difficult. You only have to look on social media at the amount of Union Jack avatar profiles calling him a "paedo defending remainer" to acknowledge that it might be difficult getting those northern votes back.
