The defund the police stuff is more trendy liberal student patter like what I mentioned further up the thread as the type of stuff which is now used interchangeby with 'socialism' or 'the left' but which is neither, a few Momentum members might be all over that, but good look trying to sell any of it to the working class people of the 'red wall' which Labour must take back, or middle England which they must acquire.

Crime will, by an enormous coincidence, be really low in the areas where people support this sort of shite.

Defund the police doesn't really work as a slogan in the UK since they aren't exactly over equipped with military hardware as in the US. Well, not since some twat of a London mayor had to have his water cannons taken away anyway.

Whatever happened to that prick?

He led a national emergency pandemic response, instructing people to "Stay at home. Protect the NHS. Save lives", but he accidentally went out and caught the virus; endangered the NHS and risked  lives.

Like has been said the US police is way different and militarised (Obama improved that situation in 2015, Trump reversed what Obama had done in 2017), it doesn't compare at all over here and the Tories have already defunded the police. BLM might be better focusing on police reform as well as campaigning for increased funding for social services that have been gutted.

Ideally I'd prefer for the police to be replaced with something that works better in the same way that I'd prefer the entire structure of government to be replaced with something that works better, but I'm not under the illusion that it's going to happen in a right-wing UK in 2020. That type of change could require the type of difference in outlook we see between younger and older voters, where if you just had younger voters deciding things almost the entire country would've replaced the Tories with a Labour gov in a complete landslide. So maybe something that could be taken more seriously in the future.

It'll be interesting to see how Minneapolis goes about replacing their police though because if it works well enough it could provide a template for others to follow and prove that it's possible to do things differently.

They had a shooting a week or two ago and they were all walking around the crime scene with assault rifles, someone obviously forgot to tell them they no longer work for the MPD.

2 teenagers were shot with assault rifles in CHOP yesterday.  It’s almost like guns are the problem.

Maybe I misunderstand. But I thought defund the police was a US thing because basically the police do everything in the states well outside of law enforcement and some actual policing is often near the bottom of the to do list. So the idea is to direct funding (and with it responsibility ) into other agencies to allow for specialism in each field, the police included - but this would mean massive cuts in the number of police. I don't see that translates here at all. Especially as the majority of our police force operate for free out of county road.

Police not really helping themselves here.

The "defund" thing in the USA stems from police forces who see their role as being the hardest gang on the block, rather than serving the communities. We really don't need to import that attitude any more than we need to import the "defund" slogan.

Really?  If you live in the area and you want to see police dealing with crime I’d say it’s welcome. It’s not as if they do it randomly and don’t have to apply for a warrant.

You want them to do their job professionally, using no more force than is necessary.

You don't want to see them getting boners over smashing shit up and twatting people.

Had a look on the MetTaskForce page and the first tweet I saw was this -

Quote

#TSG #U31 have nicked a wanted baddie in #BethnalGreen #E1 when we had a looksy round his flat we found his bags of #cannabis and suspicious bag of white powder sitting on top of a set of scales

"nicked a baddie" "looksy". What a bizarre way of interacting with the public. Is the police force now sponsored by Paddy Power?

Yeah, exactly. They might have been more than justified in breaking down the door, but stating it as one of your favourite things sends the wrong message, though I don’t agree with Jones’ characterisation of it as a ‘bunch of unhinged gangsters’. Completely needless way of portraying yourself, either way.

Brilliant.

Your reply not the police message.

Twatting people? Must have missed that bit.

I’m sure all the right people took offence.

The coppers seem to hire a lot of clowns to do their social media these days. There's been a few instances over lockdown where it's got them into hot water, Tweets about checking people's shopping baskets or inspecting supermarket aisles to make sure they weren't stocking easter eggs or some shit, pretty sure that wouldn't have been front line coppers getting mixed up in trivia like that, be some 23-year-old called Kerry.

Far as raids go, they always like to make a big fuss of them because a lot of them are just for show. You'll often see stories about them taking down a dozen doors across 'North Liverpool' or whatever yet the next day there'll be a small story about most of them being released without charge. Dope on the damn table.
