What are your favourite all time magazines?

CVG / Gamesmaster

Hotdog

Viz

Radio Times Christmas edition

The Chap

Been thinking about subscribing to The Idler recently, but I'm waiting for a trial offer.

That was great when it first came out, but then, like Empire, they basically sold out to the big studios to get the big exclusives for the biggest films. Empire took a downturn when they basically championed all things Star Wars, banging on about the films for about 6 months before finally awarding 4 or 5 stars for a film that even the review couldn't mask the mediocrity. They overdid it with Harry Potter and LOTR franchises too. Anyway, I digress.

World Soccer

Empire (for a while)

BMW Car

T3

National Geographic

FourFourTwo was good for a while, as were Evo and Top Gear.

Did anyone prefer Razzle to Escort?

Razzle was readers’ wives, wasn’t it?

I remember having this copy of Mayfair.

Club International and Men Only were the better ones when I was at school. Playbirds, Lovebirds and Whitehouse were supposed to be hardcore but were usually censored scenes from European mags.

Bloody computer games mags that weighted graphics and game play as equally important characteristics of a game.

Renewed my Private Eye sub this morning thanks to this thread. Give it two months and I’ll get a poll going based on which of last four editions was the best.

I’ll abstain. Never read it, though I have chuckled at some of the covers.

Mixmag

Match

Shoot

Gamesmaster

The Cricketer

One of my proudest moments was when Mixmag's Stan Farrow said I was "more pretentious than Mixmaster Morris".

Muzik and DJ magazine were better though, in my humble opinion.

Took a while to whittle it down to a top 5, deliberately not including things like Viz, He-Man, The Beano etc as they are comics.

Top 5 or 10 comics would be difficult. Used to read so many different ones.

I used to buy Boxing News for years in the 80's , it was mainly UK Based reporting and was great for nerds like me. It used to have round by round descriptions of all fights even at the bottom of the bill in some backwater. It also did in depth interviews and previews of upcoming fights. When I bought it , it was similar in look and size to Private Eye.

The big dog in the market was ( and still is ? ) Ring Magazine , a glossy and US based offering that still covered the same sort of items that B N did but obviously the size of America meant it was not as in-depth.

I passed a load of Boxing News on last year from the 80s, your right it had round ups from all over, in particular the Liverpool scene so to speak.

It had results from local bouts from the region, Litherland ABC etc.

I fucking love magazines, but the medium is largely dead now, sadly. Top 5:

1. The Face

2. Grand Royal

3. Jockey Slut

4. Loaded*

5. Empire

*NB - before the “lad mag” explosion and race to the bottom.

To be honest, I barely read them. Think i only ever bought them when they had a free cd I liked.

Walking back home late one night my mates and I found a load of these had spilled out of a neighbour's bin after it blew over. They were incredibly difficult to masturbate to-
