For me this is the greatest quote I’ve read from anyone. From a man of simple means, a complete legend who made our club what it is and inspires us to this day.

The problem I have with not what Bill said, but how some(not you) champion this ideology yet some are the first to screw the common man by touting tickets at eye watering prices and then, stand there and complain that there are not enough scousers at the match, yet the only people who can afford these prices, are the out of towners!

I also know a couple of self anointed super fans who have even wrote books about going the match, who have touted tickets, but hide behind a "I only do that so I can get the match". Tossers. Socialism for the new era, apparently.

Overall, there are far to many who go the match who want to talk socialism, sing misguided socialism, but don't actually live it and understand what it means and in all honesty - I think Bill will probably be turning in his grave due to the way we perceive and treat one-another these days, at the match.

I agree, but its how we treat each other in general which is the problem. If y ou vote tory then while you might care about the football team, they are often rich and right wing themselves, you are shitting on the people who allowed the club to become what it is now and that is the local population. I'm not saying that necessarily means voting Labour but it does mean not enabling people who are the antithesis of everything the city and area stands for. Without the Liddells,Morans and Fagans, there'd be no Salah,Firmino or Mane and so on.

I feel like I’m coming out here but my politics are right of centre. I have voted for the Tories more than any other party (but not exclusively). And I do so because I believe society works better if people take responsibility for themselves in the first instance. That doesn’t mean I don’t believe in community; no-one can make a success of themselves without the input of everyone else and those less well equipped to survive need assistance. But unless the majority of us work to improve our own lives there is no wealth to spread around.

We can argue about how much spreading there is but I need to be able to improve the lot of me and my family first. If I didn’t make sacrifices - leaving home and friends - to improve my career prospects I don’t earn more money, pay more tax and create jobs for others. I don’t make those sacrifices if it doesn’t, primarily, benefit me. By generating wealth for me I benefit others through paying tax and/or spending it.

As I say, I believe in community, travel a long way to home games but support the food banks when I do and have recently sent money to Homebaked (where I am a member) to make up for the pies I am not buying right now. I believe I hold many of the same values that my socialist friends carry; I just believe in a different way of achieving similar ends.

And, finally, before I retire to my bomb shelter, it does intrigue me that our largely socialist fan base can support 11 guys (plus some) who earn more in a week than I do in 6 years. How does that work? Unless you agree with me, of course.

That's all very well and good and to a large degree it is the Tory PR. The Tory ideology however is a totally different matter, entrenching inequality by moving wealth upwards while running down  health, education etc.

The free market capitalism I believe in is not really politics.  It is a way of living.  It is dogmanity.  I believe the only way to live and to be truly successful is by petty point scoring, with everyone turning against each other, everyone dodging questions, and everyone having a share of my revenge negs at the end of the day.

There is so much in this post that I disagree with that I don't know where to start, and it's for the best that I don't. None of it makes you less of a Liverpool fan though.

Football (sport in most cases) go hand in hand with politics. It always has done throughout time. It baffles me when people not from Liverpool who support us have views that ultimately fuck over the city and people who also follow the club. Especially when the most iconic figure associated with the club was as left as you can get. It does effect my opinion on them to be honest.

What a few spiteful keyboard warriors amply demonstrate is that they can read Shankly's words, but they sure as hell don't understand them.

For a couple of years in the 70s, shortly after my uncle lost his seat as Conservative councillor for Speke, Shankly and my uncle lunched together most Fridays in a cafe in Eaton Road, West Derby.

They would talk about lots of things, especially politics, because Bill was a decent person who was happy to rub along with people with whom he didn't agree about everything and he was interested in what you had to say.

For Bill, being a Tory wasn't a hanging offence, it didn't make you scum, it wasn't a conspiracy against the poor; it just meant - like @Barnesey alluded to - that you have a different idea about how we achieve the best outcomes for everyone.

I'm not a Tory, I've never voted Tory, but if you want to truly honour Bill Shankly, you could try being a bit more Shanklyesque in the way you treat other people.

Haha shut up you fucking aqueduct. You hate Bill Shankly. You hammer people constantly on the GF for Socialism. Don't preach to other until you can honestly say you practice what you preach. I mean real honesty not your warped view of it. Your hypocrisy is downright embarrassing and whilst people might day "ease up Stig you are embarrassing too having a pop at him" I don't care. You wind me up with your blatant fucking bullshit. You friggin gemini.

Call yourself a Liverpool fan? You are the biggest Fulham fan I've ever called an aqueduct.

You just don't get it do you mate. Your political views aren't the main reason I think you're a tit

Now I remember. You're the guy who posted a full frontal nude some years ago without NSFW tags. I made a jokey comment about being glad I didn't open the thread in work, and that's clearly offended you greatly.

Weird thing to say.

Your favourite AC/DC song is Sleepwalk by Ultravox.

Haha, I wasn't offended at all but it wasn't jokey and marked you out as a dickhead. I couldn't care less about that but you're an absolute whopper

Don’t worry he disappears when he knows he has been pulled up for being a cunt. Then he walzes back in as if nothings happened judging everyone.
