Facemasks, PPE and Preppy Thread

Seems pretty obvious to me the reason we get advice not to wear them is because we have a massive shortage of them, and the ones we do have obviously have to be prioritised for healthcare workers.

People, rightly, didn’t believe the government when they said it was still ok to go the pub and to watch the footy so I don’t see any reason to believe what they’re saying about masks.

Clearly they aren’t 100% foolproof or anything but it will cut down the amount you spread onto other surfaces if you sneeze or cough and at least offer partial protection against others coughing near you. They also stop you touching your face so much in my experience.

All of the countries that have a semblance of control over this virus have a compulsory masks policy.  Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, South Korea... they're all mask crazy.

Q: What mistakes are other countries making?

A: The big mistake in the U.S. and Europe, in my opinion, is that people aren’t wearing masks. This virus is transmitted by droplets and close contact. Droplets play a very important role—you’ve got to wear a mask, because when you speak, there are always droplets coming out of your mouth. Many people have asymptomatic or presymptomatic infections. If they are wearing face masks, it can prevent droplets that carry the virus from escaping and infecting others.

I had two enormous boxes of surgical gloves in my loft because every step of giving IVs at home has to be entirely sterile, and they used to chuck them at us like they were going out of fashion.

Didn’t do any home ones for ages and felt they were being wasted, so gave them to a nurse friend about 6 months ago to be repurposed, when they were desperate.

Can’t deny while I would still gladly hand some of them over if I still had them now, I fucking well wish I’d skimmed plenty off the top.

Stop using masks that our brave and selfless NHS workers need. I demand you send yours to the nearest hospital

If we have enough money to build a shitty high speed train that nobody wants or needs, we have enough for masks for everyone.

Being a little more serious. I don’t think the issue is money right now. I think there’s a global shortage of this stuff, that many countries are simply not exporting and that production in the U.K. is not yet ramped up.  The issue is that there was a shocking lack of preparation by an incompetent government

There are ways around it until proper supplies are available. In the Czech Republic the government has endorsed mandatory use of masks in public.  The population has responded by making home-made masks en masse.  Any mask is better than no mask.

In Europe/USA and western society generally we must prioritise this issue.  It is the single most cost effective way of limiting the spread of the virus.  It is imperative that we change our cultural suspicion of masks and embrace them.

I haven’t got one so I made my own by cutting some eye holes into a wooly hat. The fuckers at Londis chased me out with a baseball bat when all I was after was four pints of semi-skimmed.

I'm not surprised, walking into a chocolate shop looking for milk.

Those N95 masks only last about an hour.

You need some proper strong lungs to wear these for any length of time. Anyone with lung or heart problems shouldn't wear them as they'll cause more problems than they'd solve. They'll just not got sufficient oxygen. These folks just need to stay in.

Got a couple in my boot for use when inspecting roof spaces but a lot of places are withdrawing these it looks like.
