Coronavirus could prevent Liverpool from winning the Premier League title

It's all well and good saying have a 22 team league with Leeds and West Brom, but neither of them had secured automatic promotion, and even if they had, what of the third promotion place via the playoffs? All those teams in contention for that would be suing the PL for potential lost earnings.

The season has to be completed before a new one starts. It's the only way to avoid all kinds of legal proceedings.

And to also stop cries of  "Where's my fucking membership money?"

Completely agree. There's as much chance of clubs instigating legal action if they arent promoted, missing out on the chance of promotion or deemed to be relegated with games left to play. If you cancel or void the season, someone is going to miss out on something.

Loads of people but mainly city, everton and united fans, seem to think the 2020 / 21 season will start in August as normal if this one is 'cancelled.' It wont if half the bullshit about the current situation is to be believed.

I actually don't understand any point of view that does not mean finishing this season. We've no idea what's going to happen with this virus over the next 12 months, so we scrap the league this year and we can start again in September (if that's even possible), then what happens should they get this 2nd wave they're saying is likely? Cancel next season too? It's nonsense. Aside from all the legal challenges from not finishing the season, it just makes no sporting sense and last I checked it is still a sport. It's not even just about us. By the sounds of it they'll give us the league anyway, but football is not just about who finishes top is it? The pyramid structure of the game - be that promotion/relegation or access to European competition is the very lifeblood of the sport.

We must finish this season and of that means come next year we need to reduce the season somehow (play each team one, no cups or whatever), then that's fine. As long as we know the rules going in.

Oh and finally, good rant by John Oliver on last night's weird last week tonight.

Yep, finish the season, whenever that happens. It's all well and good citing the Chilean league or whatever, but the sums of money in the English game means it's apples and oranges.

The only way to avoid legal challenges from clubs and broadcasters is to finish it. If a secondary winter spike of coronavirus appears, it could affect any league started in August anyway, in which case you'd be looking at two half seasons when you could've at least concluded one.

They will have to find a way to bring football back to the masses, otherwise... they can play behind closed doors, use a number of pre-recorded fans reactions like they use canned laughter, clever camera positions like in women's football to hide the fact there is nobody watching from the stands. Maybe even some CGI.

Maybe I'm just a doom merchant or maybe I'm just trying to shield myself by thinking the worst but depending on how long it is shut down I think it will be scrapped and Liverpool, Leeds, West Brom etc will have as much recourse to a refund as I will from BT or Sky or you will from LFC. They'll just say *shrugs shoulders* global pandemic, what can you do?

I wonder when the penny is going to drop with the void-the-season truthers that the various cup competitions are toast. It shouldn't be too long before they all pivot from wanting to cancel the Premier League to ensuring the Champions League is completed in some form in order to ensure the next season doesn't start with Liverpool as the last team to have won it.

All things they do at the Etihad anyway. The canned laughter is a great idea for Goodison though.

The season won't be voided. They will play the season in May/June/July if they have to. They may play games in April if they can get the players to self-isolate and not be like Mason Mount.

The people making these decisions are not idiots from Bluemoon, but business men and women who know that if they don't complete the season, it impacts them on and off the pitch.

I can't see how the league will finish anytime soon. And I hate to be a pessimist, but I can really see them stinging is on this one.

Itd be just our luck to wouldn't it.

It would. I just don't see why next season which nobody has invested any time or money in should take priority over this one. Screw the schedule next season should follow this season when its finished.

Let every Club start a pre-season in July. Finish the league by playing two/ three games a week in August then straight into next season in September. Fuck off the League Cup and international friendlies.

Yep. If they can't get it underway by the summer then just restart it in august as it is, finish it then work out scheduling etc. If it takes a couple of years to reset the timings then so be it. Just fucking the season off surely can't happen. Its only the cunts who have something to gain from it that are wanting it.

I expect the outcome of this season and what happens next will remain undecided for a long while to come.

Until the epidemic is under control and the government gives the green light there is no way the football authorities can make any decisions .

It'll be something like this.

The Euros are going to be postponed a year, that's a virtual certainty at this point. That gives us the whole summer. The only question then is whether the whole season will be completed (likely, just for the TV money if nothing else) or whether the league will be played until everyone gets to 32 or 34 or some number of games that everyone agrees upon.

Assuming we'd play them all, it would probably be June/July, then shorter-than-usual offseason, then start the games late (maybe mid-September?) with the schedule moved back. Obviously you bin off the League Cup and international friendlies, shouldn't have a problem, really. Could even cancel the FA Cup (or shorten it) to get it all in.

The Athletic reporting this. Fucking unbelievable if true.

UEFA to demand £275m to postpone Euro's. European football’s governing body will demand compensation of about £275 million from its clubs and leagues to postpone Euro 2020 by a year in response to the coronavirus pandemic.
This is what UEFA estimates it will cost to push the European Championships back by 12 months to June 2021 and will be relayed to European football’s stakeholders in emergency meetings on Tuesday, during which it will be confirmed the tournament will be delayed by a year

In a time of crisis, UEFA (FIFA too) should be using their billions in the bank to support the sport at all levels but all they can do is hold their hand out. The clubs and leagues should tell them to fuck off and set up a replacement and hopefully non -corrupt organization.
