The season was always going to be completed.

It is completed, cuz it is done - they will award the title based on the current standings. They will give two more spaces for top two in championship to be promoted to the league when it resumes for the next season. Which will be - next season.

How exactly are they going to fit another 4 games into a already packed season. One that will likely be in a shortened time frame and can't be extended with the Euros.

How has Government incompetence led to a business lockdown? How could they have avoided it?

You're kidding right? More testing a better funded NHS for a start. We knew this virus was coming and we had a plan with herd immunity to allow this virus to run through the population until we run out of hospital beds.

Edit: as a country we are literally killing our NHS staff. And not because that's a risk of a job, because we've sent them to work without the right equipment. This government are very keen to use war rhetoric for this crisis, well this would be like sending our front line troops into battle with pea shooters. It's a crime of incredible proportions.

Have we all possibly jumped the gun?

Club statement makes no reference to us using government scheme and topping up the other 20%....it just says furloughed and paid 100% of wages. Furloughing employees does not necessarily mean they will use government scheme.

My understanding the government requirement for access to this money is you must furlough your staff and those staff must absolutely do no work at all, not even an email and supposedly there will be planned spot checks after the crisis to illustrate this has been adhered to. It seems logical to me this formal step of furloughing staff is to trigger access to the government fund.

No I’m not kidding, I’m not saying they’ve handled it well, you said their incompetence led to business closures, there was no scenario where that wasn't going to happen.

The business closures will last as long as they will because we have failed with this virus control since day 1.

We have had at no point the ability to test enough people, so the virus was able to run wild. It run wild because the government wanted it to. We had an opportunity to stop people travelling in from high risk zones and refused to take it - our match against athletico Madrid being an example of that, when those same Spanish fans wouldn't have been allowed into a stadium in their own country, we allowed them to fly here, drink in our pubs and then take it to the stadium. This was allowed because the government wanted the virus to spread with their herd immunity plan.

The NHS are having to refuse to see people who have this virus because they don't have the staff (partly due to self isolation, partly due to 10 ywars of austerity) or the equipment (testing kits and at times beds) to identify who has or hasn't contracted the virus. So every cough or temperature leads to a complete 14 day lock down, even for front line workers and their entire household, even if nothing is wrong with them. A test would negate the need for this.

The length and the severity of this lockdown is 100% down to government strategy.

The football clubs are making their decisions right now to a back drop of an expectation the earliest they may start playing football is June and that is likely behind closed doors - and this is seen as best case. When we locked down, there was an expectation of just weeks, in fact I recall the prime minister saying 3 weeks and at the time football was planning to restart at the end of April.

The government has fucked this up at every turn, going back to 10 years of austerity and their ignoring of reports that we were under prepared for a pandemic. They delayed stopping people from high risk countries coming here and deployed a strategy that was ridiculed globally. The lockdown will be as long and as deep because of government incompetence and that in turn hits the economy longer and harder, football too. But the Tories don't want you talking about that, they want you talking about how rotten to the core football is rather than look at their failings. Hancock wanted to change the news discussion and he's succeeded. Today even Andrew Marr has been discussing it on his show, with a segment dedicated to fucking Gary Lineaker. This is not a football issue, this is an issue of government failure.

I don’t disagree with you but your shifting the goalposts on the point I raised, businesses were always closing, see the rest of the world.

I don't think I've side stepped a thing. Every country has needed some type of restrictions. How and when has been crucial. Not all have chosen the path of the UK and not all were as under prepared as the UK and not all have needed to lock down to the point that only essential workers can't go to work. Singapore for example that was hit much earlier than the uk and I would imagine live in a more densely populated country have not needed to have the depth of shutdown we have. They did start early though.

Football has stopped in early march. It's unlikely to restart until June at best and that will be behind closed doors, so still limiting the income of clubs and limiting the need for most of their non-playing staff - I would be shocked at this point if we don't end up with a 6 month break from playing in full stadia - the government are offering just 3 months money. The severity and length of these restrictions is a failing of this government, we could have locked down quickly and early, we chose herd immunity instead. They have tried to mitigate their failings and impact they have caused by providing various schemes for business to help fund their shortfall and keep people employed who otherwise would be laid off. All LFC have done is utilise a fund available to every business in the country.  Nobody is questioning advertising companies, cardboard box makers, banks, hotels, hedgefunds, high street stores, bars, restaurants, fast food chains, transport companies or whatever industry you want to choose. No pick on football, it's partizan enough to get people up in arms, people are jealous of the success of the players and it keeps the eyes off the government and on them. By the end of this week I would be amazed if every club in the country has not put their non-playing staff on furlough because that's what all responsible businesses will do.

I think this is a possibility alright. However, the sheer finances involved in the bigger leagues make it more likely the games are completed imo. They just won't put a date in until the death rates are falling which could be a while.

less of the Tory bullshit. Anyone not arsed by this or defending it can get the fuck away from this club

Negged for this. Sums it up

In the 70’s and 80’s in this city people barely had a pot to piss in for extended periods, what they did have was football red or blue. They found money to follow their team, support the team financially when tv money and merchandising money was not really there, certainly nowhere near the level of today.

To see my team being one of the first to do this hurts me, I understand they have the right, I understand business side but it still irks me. Doesn’t sit right with me at all. But hey, what the fuck do I know.

I get the sentiment.

Would it have made any difference if it was done next week? What about after say 12 other teams had done it?

We are supposed to be a family club, different to the rest, we obviously aren’t I know that but I feel as a fan that it could and should have been handled better, how I don’t know. Let’s hope with all this money we won’t be spending we can buy a top player in the summer. But we won’t be saving enough will we.

Yeah - but by same token furloughing is not something new that exists only in relation to this government scheme at this time.

It could be case of club is doing it and paying the wages themselves.

I appreciate it is likely it is not the case, but just want to be sure before put boot in - and for me the boot should fucking go in if they are doing it and using government scheme.

I find it particularly ironic that Hancock was asked specifically about Branson and Virgin, asking for public money but not paying his staff, refused to comment.

Apparently it is not for him to comment on economic matters after the great job the chancellor is doing. More than happy to have a dig at football though.

As @Barry Wom says it is all about deflecting and using football as an easy target to distract from their terrible mismanagement of this situation.

Is furloughing by its very definition not an enforced absence from work without pay? I've only ever seen the word used in a working context and it's been to force workers to go on unpaid leave.

No surprise here, fatboy Luke Shaw wants the season scrapping and started again. What, you mean restart the 2019 / 20 season from August 2020 or, scrap it and start season 2020 / 21 in August? I think we need to know Luke!

Manchester United defender Luke Shaw has risked the wrath of his own fans by claiming that the Premier League season should be declared void if it is unable to be finished soon.

With football in England currently suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic, there is uncertainty over what will happen with the remaining fixtures.

United are currently in fifth place, and Shaw is adamant that the season should be scrapped if the games can't be finished in May, even if it means that his side miss out on qualifying for the Champions League.

Speaking during a Combat Corona Twitch FIFA competition, Shaw said: ‘Scrap it and start again. Start it again yeah. It’s gotta be you know. If we can’t carry it on it’s got to be void.'

If the season was declared void it is likely that last season's standings would be taken into account when deciding European qualification. United finished sixth in 2018-19 so would face another season in the Europa League.

If the season was scrapped it would enrage Liverpool, who are 25 points clear at the top of the table as they look to secure their first league title in 30 years.

There have been suggestions that when it is safe to do so games could be played behind closed doors in quick succession, perhaps at neutral venues in the Midlands in June.

Shaw, however, stressed the importance of having supporters in attendance and said that it 'doesn't feel right' to play without them'.

The 24-year-old experienced playing behind closed doors when United took on LASK Linz away in the Europa League last month.

He said: ‘Fans are so important. You realise it even more [now]. I think the sport is for fans really, do you know what I mean? I think if you don’t have fans, and you don’t play in front of fans, it just doesn’t feel right.

‘Especially on matchday the fans are always amazing and always help the team. Whether it’s home or even away, our fans are always brilliant and I feel like they’re always there with us.’
