He remains a superb player - best in the league by default, I’m not convinced. As brilliant as he is, there is a lot to be said for having an entire team built around you as Barcelona has for a decade; would he necessarily shine as brightly when stuck into one that hasn’t been? Three or four years ago it would likely have worked, but now I’m less convinced; how often over the last couple of seasons has he been outstanding in key Champions League games? Even in scoring twice against us in the 3-0 he was a largely peripheral figure, and we know how the second leg went.

Even if did prove to be the single best player in the league, would it necessarily be the best thing for his new team? Arguably not, with Ronaldo being a case in point - player of the season in his first year, second this time around but Juventus have steadily declined over that period. If Man City take him on, the money involved means that it’s 100% instead of improving anywhere else on the pitch, and even then I’m not sure they would be able to contrive a scenario in which they could legally afford his wages this summer unless they’re planning on dumping Sterling and De Bruyne.

If anyone in England could take him, United probably could now that Sanchez is off the books, but they too would have to abandon any further improvement to the squad.

For his own good, he shouldn't have a team built around him anymore. What Barca has done these past 5 years has done him a massive disservice. He might have a massive ego off the pitch, who knows, but on the pitch his style of play doesn't impede good team play. He'd very easily integrate into a team like us or City that attack in patterns and in choreographed ways and he's not selfish in the least with the ball. He would just need a couple players to do his running.

If he turned up at City he’d be bigger than Guardiola and the club.  He practically runs the show at Barca.

For a start, his contract situation is far from clear, and if he seriously tries to leave on a free then he'll get bogged down in a legal wrangle for months, with CAS stepping-in.

Barca could escape that if they accepted a massive bid, but they would still want £250m+ for him, which would only be half the story, as his wages will be the same over 5 years, so that's a £500m outlay for a team on a 33 year old player.  The only likely bid to match that will come from China.

But no amount of money will keep Barca fans happy, so no President can sell him.

Aside from that, he's got tax-related skeletons in his closet still, and Barca may not keep their mouths shut if he goes.

He has ruined griezman

As he did with Coutinho, and Zlatan. You have to leave if Messi does not fancy you.

L’Equipe.TV said tonite Messi was upset by an Evertonian legend Ronald K. “ no privilege anymore” !

Nobody in their right mind is paying hundreds of millions transfer fee plus 500k pw for a 33 year old clearly on the downturn. The fact is he’s never leaving there until it’s at the point he’s getting stretchered onto the pitch. At which point he’ll head to Argentina for a last season or 2.

People will point to Ronaldo but he was ‘only’ 100m and there was no drop off prior. Add to the fact he’s a freakish specimen and that sort of made sense.

Definitely in a weird spot as on one hand he’s got his choice of any club in the world on talent but very limited on who’d take the financial risk. Even if you’re Man City, they’re on about bombing out a younger Aguero who is I’m guessing younger and not far off Messi talent wise.

im going full head in the cloud here but imagine Messi somehow invoking that free release clause. Little bit of him and Suarez on frees with Thiago for 20 mill. Next couple of years are sounding not too shabby. Won’t happen but at least the thought makes me smile until we unveil Ryan Fraser.

Leeds just signed Rodrigo Moreno which is pretty nuts. This is someone who has been Spain's #9 and seriously linked to Atletico, Barcelona and Real Madrid in the not too distant past.

Fire sale at Valencia.

Thank God Lim-pdick didn't buy us...
