Lovren’s replacement will be not playing Lovren.

Lovren needs to be replaced.   He's played quite a bit.   Mainly due to Matip being a crock and gomez having to play right back.

Why

The lad can't string three games together and paying him 100k a week is fucking nuts. Decent player but he's far overplayed for the games played. Turns 29 next month to,so the injuries are not likely to clear up

His contract has 4 years on it, he's not someone you could just dump. We decided he's staying here for a while when we extended him. And even with the injuries, it was probably deserved. There's not much drop-off in level between him and Gomez which is ideal for a 3rd CB.

It'd be a bad one, Gomez and Matip are frequently injured and Van Dijk could be injured too, we've been very lucky that he hasn't so far. Plus Gomez often fills in at right back. If anything we already needed another CB with Lovren still at the club as he is frequently injured too and we play kids in the domestic cups.

Yeah, but you can reply with the same argument which the club seems to believe, which is that it's tough to find a good enough player that doesn't mind being a backup. I don't know how true that actually is, but that's how it seems to be.

 

Maybe we'll buy a CB, maybe we won't, but replacing the little Lovren gave us this season, I don't think that's a massive priority. Maybe as a stopgap we'd make a Klavan-esque signing and we'd hope he'd have play as little as possible. 

 

And yeah, Gomez isn't a right back, that's Williams now.

He has taken part in 111 games for us since 2016, can’t string three games? Nah.

He's played 794 minutes this year. 

Started 8 league games

 

Last year started 17 league games

22 the year before that. 

 

Since he's been here he has started 74 of 152 league games. 

 

He hasn't started in over 50% of games since he's been here. 111 games in 4 years, it'll be 213 games in them 4 years. 

 

He's a good defender but he's a injury prone 29 year old on big wages. I'm not staying stick a boot up his arse out the door but if you could sell him for a CB that is younger, fitter and likely on less money then it makes sense to do so. 

The only good thing you can say in his favour on wages is he was he cost nothing so the only outlay has been wages

Sure I heard that VvD had started 80 odd PL games in a row and it is a record, we have been extremely lucky that he has been unbreakable.

This. To really strengthen the squad, and possibly the starting 11, a new CB is a priority. Would have to be a very good player though, and not likely to happen with the current situation.

Minamino replaced Shaq.  Lovren played a 1/4 of the league season.  He needs replacing.  I'll be happy as long as he leaves though.  Milner, Ox and Jones will combine to cover lallana's game(s).

When he first broke through at that World Cup he looked like he could be anything he wanted, as raw as he was. It’s no coincidence that he basically stopped developing the second he signed for a big club. He’ll occasionally do some mad shit and score big goals because that’s what he has in his bag but he has neither the will nor inclination to work on making that a regular thing. It’s a shame.
