861 deaths and No 10 claims coronavirus crisis strengthens need for UK to be free of EU regulation after 2020. Ah, back to playing Brexit with a pandemic.

The UK only count hospital deaths, yeah?

In reality, it's probably north of 1,000?

But what about (ery) mass transit continuing, and schools reopening?

It seems daft to not allow some large gatherings but continue to allow the "worst" for spreading the virus.

They need to find a way to implement social distancing for all large gatherings, if that means reducing the attendance in schools, on tubes, trains and buses, at concerts, sports stadiums then so be it, find a way.

With regards that Guardian article, does anyone really think it's over? That's not what I've read or heard anywhere, it's clear we're still knee deep in the shit but it feels like we've bought ourselves the time and space needed to take stock and plan.

Covid came flying out of the traps and (rightly or wrongly) nobody knew what the fuck was going on. They didn't have its genes mapped (apparently a Shanghai lab leaked it to the world because they suspected the Chinese government wouldn't grant access to 'rival' countries, and were themselves then promptly shut down).

Nobody understood how it spread, what its death rate was, whether it was mutating. There are lots of studies now around the world gradually shedding light on that. We can also learn how other countries have managed it better and hopefully put pressure on our own government(s) to do the same.

I think the way out of this is to have the Nightingale hospitals operate as a shadow NHS, where patients are taken and treated away from ordinary hospitals. We should intensify testing and tracing, keep large gatherings off the agenda until big improvements have been made in treatments but also ensure adequate supplies of PPE and ventilators/oxygen/CPAP masks if needed.

There should be a dedicated team, or even part of the Department for Health set up specifically to track cases and report on when there needs to be tighter controls put in place so we don't breach ICU capacity. Then we should have phased reopening of smaller venues and services, but be ready to pull the plug quickly as and when needed.

It's grim stuff, but societies have coped with diseases in the past. Smallpox, cholera, TB, polio, Scarlet fever. It's grim as fuck but it's nature and you can't bolt the doors forever waiting for Dustin Hoffman to ride to the rescue with a syringe.

You can't bolt the doors forever, but there should be assurances that people who have already been affected have some kind of immunity for a decent period of time before you open things up again. Logic will say it will be the case but there's no real proof of that yet.

Maybe, can only guess, but I suppose what I'm saying is it's not that simple to shut down an entire society without understanding what all the ramifications are.

Locking Britain down was probably helped by the fact it had already been imposed elsewhere so was already becoming the norm. I was still working then and doing normal stuff, going to Costa for a coffee and stuff in my lunch break and there was a definite air that something similar to Italy and Spain was coming, an air of inevitability. Their efforts to lock down were probably helped by the fact they had much higher death rates at that time, which then became the narrative here 'two weeks behind Italy'.

But what people will say, and what they will actually do/can cope with are two different things. I'm only speaking anecdotally but around ours has been much busier lately, many more people out and about (behaving, social distancing) but definitely more out, the roads are busy too - fuck knows where everyone is going.

Everything is a careful balancing act. There's a lot of people out there pushing agendas at the moment, some innocently because they're understandably just scared, some political, some just chasing news coverage. You might get a doctor on saying how bad his A&E is, then Piers Morgan 'interviews ' him (in the loosest sense of the word) people share the story on social media and all of a sudden everyone is a public health expert. But what other factors would have/or have come into play during all this? How long before people riot? Top themselves en mass? Too many companies go bust to the point the economy can't be salvaged? Have the doctor/Piers Morgan/Jen from Facebook got a take on that?

Jen just asked if you’re ok, hun?

Edit: Should have read about 3 posts down.

Apparently it's got bad in Hungary where they're being ruled by decree.

Where did this come from? Official figures have us at 1,652 cases (although frankly I don’t think we’re testing enough) and 142 deaths

Some Hong Kong think tank have just rated us as the fourth safest place to be in Europe (14th globally) based on data, healthcare availability, actions taken by govt and compliance by citizens. For reference the U.K. is the third most dangerous place to be in the world after Italy and USA

To be honest if the Aliens came down and the first thing they saw was Hull they'd pity us and fuck off to invade another planet.

I wouldn't be surprised if aliens had designed Hull either, as some type of psychological warfare operation to drive locals mad.

Fuck off journos with you dumb ass stupid questions.

These press conferences are a waste of time.

There seems very few people in the UK media from what Im seeing that are asking relevant questions and showing an element of being pissed off and holding the government to account.

The one person that sticks out is Piers Morgan who is a fucking pleb but he's nailing any of the government ministers he comes across and doing it quite well.

The daily BBC briefing is a complete joke the questions being asked are awful.
