Hospitalizations here (Canada) are through the roof:

Thankfully the ICU numbers aren't as bad.

But plenty of surgeries cancelled/delayed, and the burden on health-care workers increeases.

And deaths are also on the rise:

Hopefully it will follow the same precipitous up/down path here as elsewhere.

A folk singer from the Czech Republic has died after deliberately catching Covid, her son has told the BBC.

Hana Horka, 57, was unvaccinated and had posted on social media that she was recovering after testing positive, but died two days later.

Her son, Jan Rek, said she got infected on purpose when he and his father had the virus, so she could get a recovery pass to access certain venues.

The Czech Republic reported a record number of Covid-19 cases on Wednesday.

Mr Rek and his father, who are both fully vaccinated, both caught Covid over Christmas. But he said his mother had decided not to stay away from them, preferring instead to expose herself to the virus.

"She should have isolated for a week because we tested positive. But she was with us the whole time," he said.

Proof of vaccination or recent infection from the virus is required in the Czech Republic to gain entry to many social and cultural venues, including cinemas, bars and cafes.

His mother was a member of one of the oldest Czech folk groups, Asonance. She had wanted to catch Covid so there would be fewer restrictions on her movement, Mr Rek explained.

Two days before she died, she wrote on social media that she was recovering: "Now there will be theatre, sauna, a concert".

On Sunday morning, the day she died, Ms Horka said she was feeling better and dressed to go for a walk. But then her back started hurting, so she went to lie down in her bedroom.

"In about 10 minutes it was all over," her son said. "She choked to death".

Although she was unvaccinated, Jan Rek stressed that his mother did not believe in some of the more bizarre conspiracy theories about Covid vaccines.

"Her philosophy was that she was more OK with the idea of catching Covid than getting vaccinated. Not that we would get microchipped or anything like that," he said.

There was no point in trying to discuss the issue with her as it would just get too emotional, he added. Instead, he hoped that by telling his story he could convince others to get vaccinated.

"If you have living examples from real life, it's more powerful than just graphs and numbers. You can't really sympathise with numbers."

The number of Covid cases in the Czech Republic reached a new daily high on Wednesday, with 28,469 cases reported in a population of 10.7m people.

The government has recently introduced new measures to combat the rise, including mandatory testing for employees and schoolchildren. The isolation period for people who test positive but have no symptoms has been reduced from 14 days to five.

On Wednesday, the Czech government announced that it would cancel plans to introduce mandatory vaccination for some sections of society. Earlier this month, thousands of people demonstrated in Prague and other cities against its possible introduction.

Around 63% of the Czech Republic's total population has been fully vaccinated, compared with an average of 69% across the EU.

Djokovic has 80% stake in biotech firm developing Covid drug
QuantBioRes is working on a treatment not a vaccine, but CEO says tennis star is ‘not anti-vax’

Novak Djokovic was deported from Australia on Sunday after losing a bid to stay to defend his Australian Open title despite not being vaccinated against Covid.

Novak Djokovic is the controlling shareholder in a Danish biotech firm aiming to develop a treatment for Covid-19 that does not involve vaccination, it has emerged.

The world No 1, who was deported from Australia this week after the government cancelled his visa in a dispute over a medical exemption relating to his unvaccinated status, bought an 80% stake in QuantBioRes in 2020.

Ivan Loncarevic, the company’s chief executive, confirmed the investment to Reuters. He subsequently told the Financial Times that he had not spoken to Djokovic, who has won more than $150m in prize money, since November and that the tennis star was “not anti-vax”.

Djokovic flew out of Australia on Sunday after losing a legal challenge to overturn the cancellation of his visa by Alex Hawke, the country’s immigration minister, who said Djokovic’s presence in Australia might risk “civil unrest” as he was a “talisman of anti-vaccination sentiment”.

QuantBioRes has about 11 researchers working in Denmark, Australia and Slovenia, according to Loncarevic, who stressed the company was working on a treatment, not a vaccine. The company’s website says it started developing a “deactivation mechanism” for Covid-19 in July 2020.

Djokovic, who may also be barred from defending his French Open title in Roland Garros in May after the French government ruled on Monday that all athletes will have to be vaccinated in order to attend and compete in sporting events, acquired his stake in the company in June 2020.

The company is developing a peptide, which inhibits the coronavirus from infecting the human cell, and it expects to launch clinical trials in Britain this summer, Loncarevic said.

A spokesperson for Djokovic did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

On the other hand, how much is this 80 percent of a little known company with 11 researchers actually worth?

Not as much as a little known company with 11 researchers and a patent for a drug.

I imagine that it's a relatively minor investment for someone with a net worth of 200 million plus but if they manage to get a drug to market (any drug) his investment could dwarf what he's earned to date.

He's a weird fucker anyway.

I follow a barrister on Twitter (specialises in divorce, can’t be too careful) and she’s been anti-vax.  No the dribble chinned type but solidly against it for about a year now.

Today she’s changed her tune and is going for the vaccine.  Not because her views have changed but because the country she’s going on holiday to makes it an entry requirement.  All that moaning, all the ‘I’m never getting jabbed’ bollocks evaporated for the need of winter sun.

You cannot possibly know if this is true.

True I cannot possibly know, but the CEO is a former Danish journalist now active in all sorts of trendy tech and clean energy start-ups, with a name that suggests links to either Serbia or ex-Yu where Djokovic is from, two main researchers are a married couple of Melbourne-based Australian Serbs, there is also a mention of Slovenia. Investors are Djokovic and his wife, each with about 40 percent.

So my guess is, it was a start-up in need of serious seed money, someone knew or could get to Ms Djokovic and the Djokovic's then decided to support them with funds in the amount they can easily write off if nothing comes of if it - or cash in if it does.

And if it's something that can actually be used against Covid, or something else, good on them.

Again.

I simply provided more context why I believe what I believe.

It is more likely he (Djokovic) will invest in something which is an ideological fit than that he is antivaxx because he is financially motivated (through his investment in a Danish start-up with 11 researchers).

That's the only thing you can be sure of - he is definitely antivaxx, and was before any investment for whatever reason.

By and large, the people getting rich off this pandemic have not been anti-vaxxers or promoters of alternative treatments.

Seeing how antivaxxers are a minority of folks that really isn't a revelation. Nor would you expect any individual to garner Pharma levels of revenue regardless.

You can be sure any of the sources your boy TucK posted have profited, some immensely.
