Looks like we could have someone like Arnie in Commando on the rampage soon in Belgium. Crazy he was still allowed to serve with access to such weapons considering his far-right links.

Belgian manhunt for armed soldier who threatened virologist | Belgium | The Guardian

A manhunt is under way in Belgium for a heavily armed soldier with links to the extreme right who has made threats against a high-profile virologist who backed the country’s Covid lockdowns.

Named only as Jurgen C, the 46-year-old soldier went missing after taking at least one rocket launcher, a submachine gun, a smaller pistol and a bulletproof vest from his barracks on Monday.

Special forces and police were searching Dilserbos forest, near Dilsen in Limburg, on Tuesday night after the man’s Audi car was discovered, but the fugitive is yet to be apprehended. The federal prosecutor’s office said that “the most worrying weapons were found in the car”.

The man’s girlfriend had alerted the army after reportedly discovering two suicide letters to friends and family at his home in Lanklaar in which he said he no longer wished to live “in such a society ruled by politicians and virologists”.

The man, a corporal who specialises in firearms training, wrote that he would “join the resistance and would not surrender without a fight”, according to the Het Nieuwsblad newspaper. He has known links to figures in the extreme right of Belgian politics, and was on the radar of anti-terrorist authorities.

“It is feared that he wants to carry out a violent action, against himself or against other persons, but the correct possible targets are still unclear,” the public prosecutor Eric Van Duyse said.

Special forces were searching Dilserbos forest with the aid of a helicopter and local residents were asked to stay indoors for their own safety. The military army base of Kleine Brogel was also under extra surveillance.

The man is said to have made threats against Marc Van Ranst, a virologist and government adviser who regularly appears in the media. The soldier tweeted earlier this year: “Who has Van Ranst’s address?”

He was subsequently disciplined and confined to a desk job but was recently allowed to resume his usual duties. The soldier has been in the army since 1992 and has undertaken tours in Afghanistan.

Van Ranst, who has been moved with his family to a safe house for his protection, told local media: “Let one thing be clear: such threats do not make the slightest impression on me.”

Questions are now being asked as to why the soldier was continuing to serve given his open support for the extreme right and the nature of his social media posts. He is understood to have a relationship with Thomas Boutens, an ex-soldier, who was convicted in 2014 as leader of the neo-Nazi group Blood, Soil, Honor and Faith in Flanders.

Boutens tweeted on Tuesday: “The thoughts are with an old colleague’s brother in arms. J, wherever you are, you are not alone, even if it is in a world that spits on the faithful.”

I got back into the country from the US on Monday and even in the 48 hours that have followed, I've found myself feeling decidedly bummed out by how negative everything still feels here.

The sun's out, everything's opening, the most vulnerable people (40%) are fully vaccinated now with 7/10 adults enjoying significant protection against the virus. Despite things being somewhat open for 5 weeks, case numbers have remained largely steady. Hospitalisations too. A good indication that all of the mixing hasn't changed the narrative. Just 3 deaths today. Ideally that's 0, but that isn't really realistic until everyone's protected. There's no evidence whatsoever that the variants (including this new one) are vaccine resistant in any way.

Things are really positive, yet there's still so much negativity around. From the government, from the media who seems desperate to keep everyone afraid and from the public who seem determined to remain in a perpetual state of misery. It seems to me there's an overriding narrative to keep people's morale low. For every "things are looking up", it seems there's a "yeah but" someone can't wait to throw in.

All you hear is "Indian variant" "don't go abroad it's too dangerous" "tier systems coming back". Smell the fucking roses, like! Be cautious, wear the mask, social distance where applicable and let's fucking go! When did we become such a nation of total morbid pussweeds?

It's mainly down to previous experiences and the seemingly boundless incompetence of this government.

I see what you're saying mate but its a nation thats coming out the arse-end of 14 months (most of it stuck in relative isolation) thats taken over 128 thousand lives with a government that doesn't know its arse form its elbow, a division between anti mask/vaxxers and pro mask/vaxxers and faced with a bleak economical future as a result of it all. Forgive people for not acting like it's the beautiful morning scene from Oliver.

The UK isn't alone in this, mate. Merely pointing out the differences between the current US and the UK attitudes among compatible, right-thinking, decent people.

The UK thinks it had it bad with Johnson? We had Trump for the first entire year of this denying the thing fucking existed, suggesting people drink bleach (some did), taking the piss out of masks. Half the population seemingly ate up his every word, made masks a freedom issue, refused to adhere to anything and it resulted in the worst death toll in the world. More than half a million dead.

The vaccine rollout in both countries has been a staggering, unprecedented achievement that will save hundreds of thousands of lives in both countries. I'm not saying we forget the dead. I'm not saying we forgive the government or stop worrying about future fuck ups. But there is room for much more optimism than we're seeing at 'home' right now.

To be fair its not been too bad where I live, parks filling up with people and bars etc busy outside. I've not been into the village since sunday because I've fucked my calf but people seem relieved and excited but also rightfully apprehensive. The fucking weather hasn't helped either its been shite for the last few weeks, you've brought the sun with you

Yeah I take your point.  That said, it's a sticky wicket right now, give it two weeks mate and we'll know a lot more about variants and vaccines.

Spot on.

It's as I said above, because the government isn't trusted the only way they can steer the population through a crisis is via carrot and stick. When they want you to go out they give you lunch vouchers, when they want you to rein it in they trumpet a "worrying/concerning new development" so you don't go too wild.

It's genuinely amazed me how many media outlets and Joe Bloggs have just regurgitated the Indian variant spiel without talking about the fact it's as yet no more dangerous nor able to swerve the vaccine.

Following on from my previous post.

Currently back at home now after isolating alone while the wife and kids got  retested.

Our youngest daughter tested positive, she's only 2. So far, no symptoms.

But the wife thought it was best I came home and unfortunately we'll just have to let it run its course throughout the house.

Ill be allowed out from Monday, my daughter tomorrow week. But until my wife and our eldest (5)test positive, their isolation time will just keep growing.

Thankfully nobody is actually sick, that's the main thing. Otherwise it's just the inconvenience that's a pain for us.

The inconvenience is a bugger mate but at least none of you are really poorly.

Absolutely, my missus is fuming because she hasn't tested positive so as it stands she can't leave the house until the 3rd of June, while I'm free to go from Monday.

But as you said, we're blessed none of us have gotten sick. My dad was the original source, he was fine, my mam tested positive, she's fine, my brother also, and thankfully he's ok as well.
