Coronavirus: Varadkar returns to practising medicine to help during crisis

Taoiseach rejoined medical register in March and is set to work one shift a week with HSE

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has rejoined the medical register and is to work a session a week to help out in the Coronavirus crisis, The Irish Times understands.

Mr Varadkar studied medicine and worked as a doctor for seven years before leaving the profession for politics. He was removed from the medical register in 2013.

However, he rejoined the medical register in March as the coronavirus pandemic began to hit Ireland, and is set to work within the Health Service Executive on a weekly basis, in an area suited to his qualifications

The HSE appealed last month for all healthcare professionals not working in the profession to register in a mass recruitment drive to deal with the crisis. Some 50,000 people applied in less than three days.

It is understood the Taoiseach is helping out in phone assessments. Anyone who may have been exposed to Covid-19 is initially assessed over the phone rather than in person, to curb the spread of the virus.

The son of a doctor and a nurse, Mr Varadkar comes from a medical family.

His partner Matthew Barrett, and his two sisters and their husbands, all work in the health services.

It may be viewed by some as a PR stunt, but in the context of his partner, his father, his two sisters and both their husbands all being in the medical profession, it's probably not a surprise he's showing his solidarity to all of them at this time.

I do hope we go back to the polls after this shit blows over.

Adios Sinn Fein!

He might be a bit odd Varadker, but he's a fairly straight shooter (pardon the pun), and he tells it how it is.

I'd trust him alot more than any of the Sinners!

Anyone know when Dyson’s prototype ventilator will be approved? Anyone know when Dyson will start production? Anyone? Anyone?

Remember, we stood down two UK based ventilator companies for this.

And why aren’t the media asking about it?

New week. Is this still going on?

Yes, we have a trip to the cellar planned today.

Meanwhile Kyle Walker has been having a party with sex workers, naughty boy.

He was told they were essential, key workers

You have to laugh at his defence, I'm out of order blah blah blah, then reiterates his message that people should stay home and stay safe. Probably on about using a Johnny.

10,000 are on order but could take weeks to get approval and past the prototype stage.  Interestingly I can't find any predicted timescale for delivery of the 10,000 or even the first 10 for that matter.

Some people are suggesting that the UK peak will be this weekend. If so then this is another terrible decision by the government!

Must take a bit longer to ship those NHS approved quality ventilators from India.

"I want to be the taoiseach for people who get up early in the morning"  yeah, fuck that prick.

I'm not binary enough not to recognise he is doing a better job than many other countries dealing with this crisis, mainly by listening to medical advice, which you'd think is an obvious way to act but it appears not, but you judge someone on his entire time in politics. His policies are disgraceful.  His willingness to blame the poor for being poor is an attribute I don't want in a human, never mind the leader of the country.  So yeah, fuck him.  I'm glad he's out.

Also, varying degrees of left wing/socialist policies are the only thing currently saving the world, so 'd expect Sinn Fein would be doing as decent a job now, if not better.   So there's that.
