The herd immunity thing is weird. I can understand it if everyone is getting vaccinated, but for the government to claim we'll have herd immunity because everyone will have contracted it feels like Catch-22 (which I just watched - good series).

You can bet your arse the slow response from the Uk is because they are working on measures that would be Implement in a World War scenario. Rationing etc. Those at the top will be eating steak whereas you'll get the staples.

China have effectively eliminated the spread with 0.006% of their population being infected. South Korea have slowed it's growth drastically with a 0.02% infection rate. Even Italy are only at 0.021% of their population being infected.

Considering we're a first world island nation with plenty of warning (though you can argue how effectively we're heeding that warning) these doomsday scenarios with millions dead seem a bit far fetched. A 0.1% infection rate would seem drastic given what's going on in the rest of the world.

Tried eating staples. Metallic taste and difficult to chew.

I seen QT last night. Is he a red ? It looked like he was wearing a Hillsborough flame badge on his lapel.

Yep, he is. Was mentioned in a Guardian report I posted yesterday.

I can only think that they want to run at capacity (of healthcare systems) for as short a term as possible. While we are operating under capacity, we are inefficient. So if that theory is correct, they want to hit capacity as soon as possible then control it at as close to capacity as possible.

That's a lot of capacity. Do you think they need a Flux Capacitor running at 1.21 gigawatts?

Yep. From Guardian :

Quote

Ashton, a Liverpool fan, said if football matches were held in empty stadiums, there was a risk that fans would congregate in pubs instead. “Clubs that have their own TV channels need to make viewing of the games free to everybody, so people can watch them at home,” he said.

edit : sorry, beaten to it. Link is here anyway : https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/mar/12/health-expert-brands-uks-coronavirus-response-pathetic

Both the UK and the US health systems are designed to run at capacity in normal times.

You can tell it's gonna be made into some kind of buzzword as it has "immunity" in it so it sounds good. The problem is, experts say it basically takes 2/3's of a population to contract a virus to get herd immunity. If that's really what the plan is, you'll see what the death toll looks like in a year or so, I guess.

But steps are being taken to extend that capacity (not perfectly, but still). Also, winter pressures start to ease in the coming weeks. Also, the definition of capacity will be quite flexible at this time.

If Corbyn was PM and decided on "herd immunity" :

Tories : "STALIN!" "SOCIALISM KILLS, COMMUNISM KILLS, WE TOLD YOU SO."

Right wing Zionists : "HOW MANY JEWS IS HE GOING TO KILL! ANTISEMITE!"

Economists and the rich : "HE'S CRASHING THE ECONOMY WE WARNED YOU."

My usual sunny, optimistic disposition has taken a bit of a knock- the surgery just phoned, all GP appointments are now cancelled, and urgent cases only will get a phone consult. *gulp*

According to last night's figures, Forth Valley has 6 cases so far. Must be a massive under-estimate.

I had a doctor's appointment booked for Monday evening.  Got a call earlier to say it'll now be a phone consultation.

Aye, my sister just messaged to say she got a similar call from her surgery in Coventry.

Edit: and a co-worker who lives near Leeds.

Then, by definition, that would be over capacity.

Yeah, but they will have decided that their optimal functional capacity while keeping the pandemic as shrot as possible is 150% or something like that.

I'm saying that, but I have no faith this is truly thought through, they could just be winging it, really badly!

I was just turned away from my physio in the City hospital because some cunt who was infected went to their appointment. City hospital now having to disinfect the whole building, patients can't be visited at certain times, same in all the other hospitals.

Schools/Universities (not sure about Kindergartens which would affect the missus and her work) shutting down next week until at least the Easter holidays.

I'm off shopping in a bit, RIP me.
