The voice of golf Peter Allis has checked out after carding an 89

Still his best moment ..

PETER ALLISS had us all going on Sunday.

Midway through the BBC's final round telecast from the British Masters, Ken Brown remarked that wayward Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano needed Countdown star Carol Vorderman to help work out his yardages.

"Carol Vorderman," mused Allis, dreamily. "Watched her on TV the other afternoon and got aroused."

After several seconds of dread-laden silence, the veteran broadcaster put his speechless colleagues out of their misery by adding: "That's seven letters ... not bad for a lad who left school at 15!"

Chuck Yeager, the first man to break the sound barrier has gone supersonic into the next world at 97.

Yup, good innings he had too. Read a story about him just landed yet another test flight when he saw one of the first the Lockheed Starfighter F104 prototypes and thought 'I'll take that for a spin.' So he hopped in it and took to the air to put it through it's paces.

For those who dont know, the starfighter has tiny stubby wings and would go on to become known as the widow maker for good reason.

Anyhow, Yeager got it into a spin, literally and couldnt recover it. So he had to bale out. Brand new fighter written off, just like that. The man had balls of steel and deserved the title 'The right stuff.'

If you're interested,  go on the BBC news app and look for Chuck Yeager dies, there's a couple of links on there, one about a Spitfire getting to Mach 0.89 you might like.
