Watched that Simon Reeve in Russia and it was really interesting. Just seems like organised crime is the only way anyone makes a living there in some places. He was in some town out in the sticks and half the forest had gone missing due to illegal logging, as soon as he asked about it the police turned up and escorted him to the train.

 

Whole towns were just empty because there was no work at all. It was interesting in the context that a lot of that was due to the fall of communism. There were people out in the sticks doing stuff like herding reindeer, and under communism the state would just buy them all, they'd have fuck all use for them, but it was the only way to support those types of communities. Now the state has withdrawn and they're all skint and drinking turps. 

 

There were chinese people working on Russian land too and sending all the food and profits back to China. The Russian government had offered Russians money to resettle there and farm but they wouldn't, so the chinese just moved in instead.

 

Makes you wonder if the place is just too fucking big to be a country.

Nail - head. Really not much different than the States. Nearly impossible to have that vast a landmass, with multiple diverse "micro economies" ( read a couple in the top 10 in the world) share many common goals and find a magnanimous solution.

He's rumoured to be one of the main contacts between the KGB and the Red Army Faction group while he served in Dresden according to a biography on him.
