Liverpool seal swoop for Arsenal doctor Gary O'Driscoll with Gunners now advertising for his replacement

  • Arsenal lead doctor Gary O'Driscoll has decided to join Liverpool on a new deal
  • He had been the lead candidate to replace Andrew Massey, who is joining FIFA
  • However he will not be allowed to leave Arsenal until a replacement is found

Liverpool are appointing Arsenal's lead doctor Gary O'Driscoll as their new head of medical services.

Sportsmail revealed on January 8 how highly-respected O'Driscoll was the leading candidate to replace Andrew Massey, the Reds' current of head of medical services, who is leaving Anfield to take up a similar role at world football's governing body FIFA from March 1.

And Sportsmail can confirm O'Driscoll has decided to take the role at Liverpool after holding talks with the Champions League club.

O'Driscoll, who has roots in the north-west having spent a period working in Manchester during the 2000s, is widely recognised as being one of the best in his field and Arsenal were determined to keep him at the Emirates.

Arsenal, however, will not let O'Driscoll leave Arsenal until a replacement is found. The Gunners have already started advertising for the role as head of sports medicine.

Seems a bit draconian, does it not?

Yup not sure how that works with employment law in 2020

That's like saying because the Ox was shit at arsenal, he's shit here. The doctor doesnt cause injuries or prevent injuries by injury prone players. It's the collective team work that brings the benefits.

Yep, sometimes a good workman really can blame his tools.

Ah, remember all the armchair experts who were convinced that the reason all our goalkeepers were shit was John Achterberg. They've been oddly silent recently, I can't imagine why.

Yeah, it was really weird to be wondering whether a coach was a bit shit because every goalkeeper he came in contact with became a laughing stock. Can't think why people would have had question marks. It was astoundingly clear given the competence of our past goalkeepers that he was brilliant all along.

Yes, it is weird that a bunch of people on the internet thought that they knew better about coaching than Jurgen Klopp, I fully agree.

No, what's actually weird is that you've clearly never questioned or at least debated a decision a manager has made in football. The only supporter who has never done that. We all aspire to have your restraint and trust.
