His first game with the armband, on Boxing Day 1961, ended in a 1-0 defeat to Rotherham United But this was alongside a picture of him leading the team out, without an armband. I've fallen into assuming that Captains have always worn armbands, even though I've obviously seen loads of captains without them. It's just something I'd never really noticed or thought about. I started looking for when armbands became the norm. I think I've pinned it down to 1985/86 for domestic games. Anyway, it gave me an excuse to dig out some great pictures of captains. Phil Thompson 1980 Graeme Souness 1982/3 Graeme Souness - March 1984 Phil Neal, March 1985 And finally... a banded Alan Hansen, 1986 Maybe they were a European thing first. Tommy Smith, 1973 Emlyn Hughes, 1977 Phil Thompson 1981 The Ron Yeats photo was obviously much later than 1961 as we were still in white shorts until 64-65.

Club also does not renew partnership deal with Chaokoh who were also under investigation for animal cruelty using captured monkeys to collect coconuts! Liverpool have appointed former Portsmouth midfielder Gary O’Neil as assistant manager of their Under-23 side. The 37-year-old, who also played for Middlesbrough, Bristol C, Norwich and West Ham made 542 career appearances. He had to retire early though due to an Achilles injury. O’Neil will assist Barry Lewtas, who was promoted from the Under-18s in May. O’Neil told Liverpoolfc.com: “I’m really excited. I’ve been desperate to get going. “It’s been going on for a little while and obviously with the break and the Academy having to take an even longer break than the first team, “I’ve had to wait a little while, but now it’s finally come around and I’m really excited and can’t wait to get going.” O’Neil received a personal recommendation from Reds sporting director Michael Edwards. Edwards worked with O’Neil during his time at Portsmouth, and the pair have kept in contact since. Academy manager Alex Inglethorpe said: “Gary’s knowledge, experience and passion for the game will help not only the players that he works with but also the staff as well.” While, O’Neil tweeted: “Feel extremely grateful and privileged to have been given such an amazing opportunity at such an early stage of my coaching career. Cannot wait to get going and help our talented squad progress further with their careers!”
Shooter in the Motor 8,565 Report post Posted 10 Aug 2020, 17:19:27 Klopp exposes xG theory Meanwhile, respected stats man Ted Knutson says Liverpool “have stuff going on that is beyond” the ever popular expected goals (xG) model. Jurgen Klopp’s men surged to their first Premier League title and first top-flight title for 30 years. In fact they blew the field away with a winning margin of 18 points. That was on the back of the 2018/19 season in which they came up just short, losing out to Man City by just a point. However, it was City who should have followed up last seasons title with another title this season, and by 12 points, according to xG. In fact the Reds should have had 39 points fewer over the two seasons in which they have recorded the second and fourth-best Premier League seasons ever. The results have led Statsbomb co-founder Knutson to question whether Klopp has exposed the limits of xG.

Based on xG minus Goals scored, Mane is our best finisher and Bobby is our worst... I don’t think that’s too far off.

dockers_strike 4,131 Report post Posted 7 Oct 2020, 15:12:34 People criticise the club for not doing enough community work every time everton announce something. But the club does good stuff, it just doesnt shout it from the rooftops like others. https://www.liverpoolfc.com/news/community/411462-lfc-foundation-launches-new-community-initiatives-fund A new Community Initiatives Fund to support projects which benefit the community in and around the Anfield area has been launched today. The fund, created by LFC Foundation and supported by Liverpool Football Club, is intended to support and assist local groups or organisations who have great ideas to create a lasting project or initiative in the L4, L5 and/or L6 postcode areas within the Anfield and Everton wards. In April 2019, Liverpool FC committed to make a donation to a community grant fund each time a concert or other major event is held at Anfield. This fund was specifically for reinvestment into the local area. To thank the local community for its continued support, LFC’s Red Neighbours team has agreed to match the £30,000 donated, meaning registered charities and other not-for-profit community groups and organisations who meet the fund’s eligibility criteria can apply for a grant of up to a total of £60,000 - which represents the total sum of the 2019-20 funding pot. Following on from the community event held at Anfield in November 2019 and feedback received from local residents and ward councillors, LFC Foundation is now pleased to formally launch the Community Initiatives Fund and invite local groups or organisations to bid for funding that will help to deliver new and exciting projects and help make a positive lasting impact on our neighbourhood. Andy Hughes, chief operating officer at Liverpool FC, said: “We would like to thank residents for their continued support and patience with us during concerts and major events we held at Anfield. “We hope this fund can be used to benefit the community as a whole and we look forward to supporting some fantastic projects and initiatives, especially during these challenging times.” Matt Parish, director of LFC Foundation, and Forbes Duff, senior manager of Red Neighbours, added: “We are pleased to be supporting the club to deliver funds to community groups and organisations who want to truly make a positive impact in their local community and neighbourhood.” Anfield and Everton ward councillors said: “We would like to encourage local groups from the Anfield and Everton wards to apply for the LFC Foundation Community Initiatives Fund to help to deliver lasting projects or initiatives that will benefit both wards in the vicinity of the stadium. “We know those in our communities have some fantastic ideas that would truly make a positive impact and it would be fantastic to see some of these come to fruition for residents to enjoy in the future.” The fund is being managed and administered by Liverpool FC’s official charity, LFC Foundation.
