Playstation 5

I've preferred Playstation consoles for most of the last two decades, at this point though I couldn't give a fuck about them any more. £700 could get me most of the way to upgrading my PC so it's no contest for me at all. The lack of a disc drive and their digital future crap where they seem to be phasing out discs isn't what I'm into either seeing as I like to collect physical games.

One type of digital I'm ok with is GOG. With them you can download installers for your games, back them up onto external drives then never have to visit GOG again if you don't want to or even connect to the internet if they're offline single player games. Then as long as you keep the games backed up properly they're yours to install on a PC whenever you want.

This clearly isn't how Sony work though with their consoles and digital games. Almost all of my gaming is done on PC now anyway due to how shit things are for me with consoles (and I do get that for many others things are generally fine, even though a £700 console without a disc drive probably isn't fine for most.) I'm still glad to have several of them but they're mainly for collecting physical versions of games, the occasional exclusive if I'm interested (I'm not usually) even though they often arrive on PC now anyway and finally as a good backup to play games on in case anything happens to my PC.

I'd like a company to step up at some stage though and make a console whilst also genuinely caring about physical game preservation instead of just waffling about it. If they aimed somewhere between the power of what a Switch (and Switch 2 when it's out) offered and PS/Xbox and it was at a reasonable price that could be a good thing. I'm not saying that's likely to happen but I'd definitely be interested if it did.

The real kicker with digital becoming more prevalent is that you often get games released on digital first and then physical copies a month down the line. Digital only for big AAA releases can get fucked.

Bring back that short glory period of DVD where you bought a physical copy and got a code for a digital version and bonus extra's packaged with it.

Looking forward to Indiana Jones next month…

First I've heard also that Forza Horizon 5 is landing on PS5 end of April. Microsoft softening on their platform exclusives.

Not sure why Sony sold lots of old IPs to Bandai so they can be released on other platforms as seen in the recent Direct.
