Bought the bird a bottle of champagne for her 40th in September and she’s never opened it as “I’m not really a fan of champagne and it should be drank on a special occasion”.

I’m sure she’ll understand when she gets in from her Christmas do later to find I’ve necked it, finished the cider and now on her rum!

Has she noticed yet?

It was pretty apathetic towards it until we started playing the matches then the reality kicks in and we need to be winning it.

It would have been a real kick in the balls to go out there, sacrifice the League Cup, put the players through the travel and mental and physical exertions and then come back without the trophy.

Also glad we won so we don't have pages and pages of crazy conspiracy shite that was bubbling up at one point.

I see Salah got an award for player of the tournament. Bit odd.

The League Cup needs to stop being seen as a sacrifice. The esteem in which this tournament is held by the other continents partaking puts this in another stratosphere.

Agree that the conspiracy stuff is embarrassing. There are threads devoted to similar ridiculousness from Everton and Man City fans on here.

This is what Klopp said about it. Klopp is often right, and even so, he's almost never been more right on a subject than on this one.

“We are playing against a side from a country and continent where this competition means everything to everyone and, in England, we have to explain why we come here. That’s how Europe looks at the world, that we are the centre of attention.

“Flamengo got sent here from their country with a clear order: win it and come back as heroes. We got told: stay at home and play the Carabao Cup."

I personally think that any of the teams who are playing in the CL or EL should have the choice of not participating in the league Cup. That way nobody can have a good whinge about them playing weakened teams and not taking it seriously. Let's be honest, if given that choice the majority would pull out of the competition.

I don’t think they would. It’s a chance for fringe players to get minutes, which is a positive thing. Also if you get a few easy draws then it’s a day at Wembley for the fans.

I think you'd be in for a surprise at how many would pull out John. They just play way too many games and they normally blood their youngsters in the F.A Cup as well, if the draw is favourable.

I agree that this is a much more worthwhile competition to win, for various reasons. We were forced to sacrifice the League Cup though.

Drop the double semi final and it's a decent competition. Not like winning the top club competition in the world, mind.

That's happening as of next season, so at least one positive change.

The problem with the Carabao Cup is that, now and for the foreseeable future, the second-best result is going to be to go out in the first round.

At least if you make the semifinal of the FA Cup you can spin that as something, especially for the mid-table clubs. "We had a decent season," you can imagine someone at West Ham or Everton saying. "Finished eighth in the league and got to the semifinal of the FA Cup."

You cannot imagine anyone saying that about the Carabao Cup. Either you win it, or it's totally pointless.
