His performance last night was exactly why we tend to see new signings so little in their first 6 months. He’s nowhere near ready to know what his responsibilities are yet in the system or have a clear connection with his teammates.

we play so well as a team unit that the importance of knowing your role is heightened beyond what it would mean in other teams we’ve had, where you can just play the position.

hes obviously a talented player and I expect him to be really good for us, but last night he ran around lost for most of it, and if subbing a sub didn’t have such negative connotations (especially for a recent signing) id have taken him off second half when they were particularly strong and looking like they could’ve got a second goal.

Looked lost and couldn't get into the game but it will take time to settle into the side and as much as anything, time for his team mates to know his game. He showed for the ball a lot but we don't tend to pass the ball short to a marked player in a crowded zone ; our game is more about players finding space and receiving, then recycling quickly - pass and move. Minamino was trying to play on the shoulder of a defender but our midfielders saw the move then opted to pass elsewhere - understandable when we were playing against a very good counter-attacking team.

From what I've seen of him at Salzburg, he likes to run with the ball from deep and pop up all over the pitch and he doesn't yet look suited to the wide role that he was given last night or as a lone central striker as for the Everton game.

He will adapt and his team mates will learn how to use him better, next season we will see what he has to offer but I still think he is much more of an attacking midfielder than a genuine forward.

Agreed. We need to bin him off.

"It was really difficult for Taki," said the Liverpool boss, when asked for his verdict on Minamino's Premier League debut. "He felt immediately his calf, he needed treatment at half-time. That was, for his first Premier League game, exceptional."

From the mirror

And from the echo

Jurgen Klopp praised Takumi Minamino after thrusting the new Liverpool signing into a “difficult” Premier League debut.

The Japan international emerged as a substitute after 33 minutes of the 2-1 win at Wolverhampton Wanderers on Thursday as replacement for the injured Sadio Mane.

It was Minamino's first taste of the English top flight since arriving from Red Bull Salzburg for £7.25million at the start of the month.

“He is a player for between the lines. Oxlade had to be a little higher (after Minamino came on).

“It was really difficult for Taki. He injured his calf towards half-time, he had to have a bit of treatment, he felt nothing and could go through so he should be fine.

“For his first Premier League game he did really well, and is completely integrated in the team.”
