We really do need to add a player in January just to help freshen things up. We play 17 times between Dec 4 and Feb 1st

This will be what defines the season and the front 3 lack of rest over the summer could prove costly. I wouldn't have them play at all in Doha or in the FA Cup.

We've shown we only buy players if the ones we've been following for the long term become available and that's rarely in January. As you say, we just won't play any of our top players in the cups.

We need to beat Genk and Napoli and turn Salzburg into a night off. If we do that then with Villa in the league cup, world club semi final and the FA cup there are 4 games we can rest 95% of the team. 13 games in that period is fine, Leicester away has stood out for awhile as huge stumbling block.

Yeah to be honest I think its all a bit over-exaggerated. Ultimately the club decides who plays when and where. Could easily trot out a Brewster-Origi-Shaqiri//Lallana-Keita-Milner front 6 without impacting on the first teamers. Just make the defence a medley of whoevers fit in the reserves. Most of these aren't games we need to win. Only the league fixtures & hopefully a couple of CL games to get us out the group with some to spare.

If, and it's a huge if, we buy someone in January, they won't be ready to play in Klopp's system for a while anyway.

1 player really isnt going to make a difference. Squad sizes and non home grown numbers are all limited.

 

If push comes to shove, Jurgen must field an entire U23 side in the league cup from now to whenever we go out. Same for the FA Cup. Spread ourselves too thinly and we'll end up with nothing.

The EFL have fucked themselves and their own flagship cup competition with this decision. Even more so than is already the case, the bigger clubs will start fielding U18s and have their youth team coaches overseeing everything while everybody involved at first-team level is kept well away. There may come a point where any English club that qualifies for Europe is not entered in the following season's League Cup. And there may be a point after that where PL clubs aren't involved at all.

I'd still take Elliot, Jones etc to the the world club Cup. Don't like the idea of sending the U18 to Villa as they'll get battered and it won't do their confidence any good. But needs must.

This looks like it's our decision. Appears as though he want out before Christmas.
