Neco Williams

*Meant to put this here instead of the match thread*

Of course, Neco is still young and Trent has set such a high standard, it'll be unfair to expect similar quality from him. He still has time to improve and hopefully does so.

The problem at the moment is Neco hasn't showed signs of progress since he got into the team. I reckon a large proportion of the 27 times he lost possession was caused by taking too many touches on the ball in his own half, trying to beat a man. Atlanta definitely did their homework on him based on that.

It has been a very noticeable thing. Rather than his teammates being blamed for passing him the ball, the focus should be on the young lad learning to keep it simple at the back. Rhys Williams is an example of a young lad keeping it simple with his passing at the back. 1 or 2 touch maximum, straight to a teammate.

The lad's probably nervous as fuck due to all the grief he gets on social media the second he doesn't pull off a Maldini-style challenge. Sad to see. When things pick up he should be given a season on loan somewhere to really build his game and his confidence. Really pisses me off seeing people giving him grief. he's a kid. You can't call yourself a Liverpool fan and abuse a Liverpool youth player, you just can't. I can imagine what Shanks would say, and it wouldn't be broadcastable.

The only Liverpool players who ever deserved abuse were twats like Ruddock, Diouf, Ince, David James etc.

Even if a player is shit and he tries his hardest he shouldn't be given any grief. It's the club and manager who bought and selected them thinking they were good enough.

He definitely has a confidence problem and seems a bag of nerves at the moment. Hopefully a loan to a premier league club can sort him out.

I’m not trying to slate the kid whatsoever. He’ll go on to have a decent career I’m sure. But as you’ve alluded fo we’re the best team in the world and we have to aspire to maintain that level. Players have to be absolutely exceptional to have any chance of making here. Look at Hoever and Brewster for instance.

I just don’t see it with Williams.

I'm seeing a naive young player. Trent was a naive young player of years ago. Man City used to target him. I doubt if Klopp would be playing him if he didn't think there was a player there.

We always say about players who don't play for us let Klopp coach him for a year or two and we will notice a vast improvement,  well here we have one of our own who is working under the best manager in the premier league,  Klopp will improve this kid of that I have no doubt whether it's enough to have him playing regularly in the first team remains to be seen but let's give him a chance its far to early to be throwing him over the side .

Exactly. Our fanbase wind me up sometimes. I hope he plays tomorrow and has a barnstormer.

I would have sold him immediately after the Man Utd game when he got caught TWICE in exactly the same way. I stand by that, what has he done since ? Nothing.

I hope he misplaces his first pass during the warm up and I can say I told you so.

Counterpoint:

Jurgen seems to be frequently losing his rag and yelling at the Main Stand. Did you ever get wound up by anything the crowd would say to you or the team?

Roy Evans: There was one reserve game where this one fella kept heckling me and giving me stick. Shouting stuff like “you’re bloody clueless Evans”. It was relentless, it went on all game. In the end I was really starting to lose my rag and at the end of the game I turned around and was just about to give him what for, and then I saw it was Joe Fagan. He was laughing his head off!

Not relevant to Neco but I've always liked this story

I do too, despite my criticism. 3 Stacks hopes we sell him at the first opportunity just so he can win an argument on the internet.

Why are you misrepresenting me? I literally say he's not very good now, but it doesn't mean he'll never be good enough. That's not in any way controversial. I'm sure you'll cry about the neg now too.

I'm not saying he'll never be good enough, we don't know that. But fair or not, it's putting your head in the sand if you think he's not a complete liability at the moment.

Agree with your point in general, but Trent was better when he first came in and also progressed far quicker than Neco has done so far.

Trent had issues defensively, which is why Gomez was used for certain games. He was always quality on the ball.

Neco is a bit weak with and without the ball, and that's my worry.

As has been said he is a young player, he is also very different to Trent. There are a few parts of his game that need ironing out but this exposure to first team football will be good for his development.

He can be very frustrating at times but he seems to be playing when we try this new 4 2 3 1 formation which gives very little cover to the full backs unlike the 4 3 3.

We have all had moans about Trents performances over the last couple of years. They all seem to coincide with when Henderson isn't playing, let's get off Neco's back and give him a chance to get back to the form he was showing last season.

When did we try this "new" 4 2 3 1?
