Klopp: Away form has to improve in the Champions League

Jurgen Klopp has implored his players to get over their dose of travel sickness in the Champions League.

The Reds were anything but convincing in the group stages last season, losing all their three away games and needed their strong Anfield form to progress to the knockout stages.

In 2017/8, the story was similar with Liverpool winning just one of their away trips in the group stage (Maribor 7-0)

This season the Reds continued the trend on the back foot losing 2-0 to Napoli and they are on their travels this evening to play Belgian club Genk.

Speaking ahead of the clash, Klopp said his team cannot play with fire again this season or they will suffer the consequences.

The Echo reported Klopp as saying:

“Last year we were lucky with how tight the group was that we could lose three times away and still have a chance to make it through the group.

"That will not happen this year. It's completely different.

“ We don't rely on home games or whatever. Obviously we like to say European nights at Anfield are really special but other teams can make a special atmosphere as well.

“They are not all the same, we could have won away games to be honest performance-wise which we didn't win for some reason.

While the Belgian side are widely seen as the weakest team in Group E, they held Napoli to a scoreless draw in their first home game at the Luminius Arena.

Klopp knows that the only way to recifity this issue is to keep working hard and the results will show.

“We know it's not historically good what we have done (in the away group games) in the last few years, but in general the Champions League was obviously really good.

“ We did the right things in the right moment but we don't rely on these things.

“We know we have to improve and we try again and again and again until it works out."

Part of the issue with our European away form has been that the decision making and ruthlessness of the attacking players has fallen way short of the standards they usually set. The other problem is that it has often been combined with a midfield 3 that is more workmanlike than creative, so we don't offer an alternative threat. We end up wasting possession in promising positions as well as allowing the opposition onto us in our own half. Klopp and his coaching staff have learned that being too expansive isn't a formula for success on European road trips, but they've yet to get the balance right to make us look confident and effective yet defensively solid at the same time. We've shown the odd signs that we can do it though. Bayern and Porto away are good examples, as is Barcelona away, despite the result. We also showed it in the first half in Rome.
