Of course Adrian is not Allison but he wasn't to blame for last night's near disaster. Matip was a big miss but switching off for 20 mins was a collective failure to follow a basic rule of not thinking a game is won with an hour to play.

I hop we have the legs on Saturday to match Leicester for 90 minutes

Not saying he was to blame, last night or in general, but not having our first choice, bloody brilliant and cool as a cucumber number 1 between the sticks has definitely impacted on how solid we’ve been (or not) at the back, more generally.

Looked like virgil knew Joe wasn't up to speed and was getting caught out helping Joe and trying to do his own job.

I quite enjoyed Come Back (The Story of the Reds) by the Mighty Wah! at half time. Long may George continue.

"Well did you ever hear of hope?
'Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!'
A small belief can mean
you'll never walk alone
And did you ever hear of faith?
Encouragement! Development!
And it's all to you!
Yes, it's all to you!"

I agree that Virgil seemed well below his usual level. Got properly roasted for the first goal. Gomez was getting most of the blame but defending is a collective effort. The intensity wasn’t there for the whole game and the midfield was non existent at times during their good spell. Doesn’t help

The centre backs had no protection. It was a throwback to the Norwich game and the Super Cup where for moments we were giving the ball away then getting bypassed like the midfield wasn't even there. Centre backs will never look good in that situation, even someone like van Dijk. There's only so much you can expose CB's to one on one defending before they get embarrassed. Saying that, Gomez has been mediocre since he came back from his injury.

Last night wasn't dissimilar to the Palace game at Anfield last season. They occasionally happen. Its how you handle them that counts.

Or the Palace 3-3 away when we were chasing goals and couldn't close it out. The difference is that thankfully we are now made of steelier stuff.

Good thing about last night is that it reinforces belief within the team that when shit does get ugly, they have the ability and temperament to get the job done.

Momentum shifts like last night are very difficult to turn back into your favour.

They might punch themselves out before then like Ajax did in the later rounds last year.

The most impressive thing about them is how well they adjusted to playing us (after the first 30 minutes anyway) given that their domestic fixtures are probably less than challenging.

I said in another thread that its naive of us not to underestimate a team under the Red Bull 'franchise' (go on, neg away!) Its not unlikely that even though this team plays in Austria a few of their players will make it big in major European leagues over the next few years. As a nursery team (thoughts on that are for another discussion) its a major prize for these players to cut their teeth in the world's biggest club team competition while still relative unknowns. Mane and Keita have come through their ranks and wont be anywhere near the last to do so.
