Liverpool face expulsion from the Carabao Cup over the fielding of an ineligible player in Wednesday night's 2-0 win over MK Dons.

Kop boss Jurgen Klopp played an experimental young side and are due to face Arsenal at home in the next round of the competition but if an investigation proves they played a player who was not correctly registered, they could be expelled.

"The club are aware of a potential administrative issue pertaining to one of our players," a club statement said.

"We are working with the relevant authorities in order to establish the facts of the matter and will be making no further comment until this process is complete."

The EFL added: "We are currently considering the matter."

It is understood 22-year-old Spaniard, Pedro Chirivella, is the player in question with his international clearance questioned.

Liverpool beat MK Dons thanks to goals from James Milner and Ki-Jana Hoever.

The best part of this is no matter the result Everton and man City fans will be fuming.

Either its a fine and we get away with it because of redshite bias, or we get kicked out and then it'll be a case of us intentionally doing it so we get kicked out without having to suffer any losses.

I'd be kinda impressed if Liverpool were kicked out. If the roles were reversed and it were MK Dons who had won after fielding an ineligible player, they'd already be out. Oh, and let this be a lesson to anyone who thinks that recent success on the pitch shows well run the 'club' is these days. The 'club' is the same mix of the sublime and the ridiculous. All that is different is Klopp.

Nah.

The Sunderland precedent suggests a fine would be proportionate.
