Report: Domestic cup competitions to take a back seat this season.

Don't expect Liverpool to put a strong focus on the domestic cup competitions this season.

The Mirror reports that the Fenway Group are desperate for Liverpool to win their first League title for 30 years, as well as attempting to retain the Champions League trophy.

And therefore Jurgen Klopp has been told to put a lower emphasis on the FA and Carabao Cup especially with UEFA Super Cup and FIFA World Club Cup also on the Reds football calendar  this season.

The traditionists among the fanbase and former players will shudder at the thought, as their view is that every piece of silverware is well worth fighting for.

This is especially the case for a club like Liverpool who are blessed to have such a prestigious history.

There are also those pundits who love to place the blame at the diminishing interest of these cups at the feet of the big clubs.

However, the other side of the coin is that it is a new footballing landscape to 10 years ago let alone 20, and the money on offer for ultimate success is what plays in the minds of the owners.

There is much more at stake than ever before and players cannot be expected to produce at a optimum on a game to game basis.

Jurgen Klopp and the players themselves have regularly discussed the squad mentality that Liverpool currently have.

This proposed policy will give the likes Rhian Brewster, Yasser Larouchi and (provided he remains on the books) Ryan Kent along with fringe first team players a chance to give the manager some food for thought with strong performances.

While Klopp is undoubtedly is own man and quite rightly wont be dictated to, at the end of the day he will be well aware there is always a bigger picture at play.

The total Rumbelows Cup wouldn't pay for Lallana's wages for the year, even if we won it, so I can see being hedged against, but the FA has enough money to make it worth looking at, especially the early rounds where the young ones could get a game, but I get it. Why waste finite resources chasing something which might not even end up as cost neutral, even if you win it, when you factor in wages, travel, accomodation etc?

Oh, yeah, were a fucking sports team that looks to win fucking competitions!

No quotes in that article to back up those claims, but I can see Klopp not prioritising progress in the League Cup. Most of the fixtures bar the final take place before the end of January, and we have a busy schedule up to that point as we are fitting in a European Super Cup game this Wednesday, and the Club World Cup in mid-December. Those games involve travel to Istanbul and Qatar respectively, so it's not like a League Cup away trip down the M6 to somewhere in the Midlands. There will already be some fixture re-scheduling for league games in December.

From February onwards, there would basically be 3 or 4 FA Cup fixtures maximum if we went all the way (replays have been jibbed off from the quarter finals onwards), plus any European fixtures on top of the league schedule. Don't forget we have a 2-week winter break in February too, so that's the chance for the squad to have a breather (and for the club to play a couple of lucrative friendlies somewhere, no doubt).

It's all very well saying to just play the kids in the early rounds of the domestic cups and see how far we can get with them, but people need to realise that Klopp and the coaching staff have to prepare and be present for EVERY first team game. They don't get a rest like the players might.

We haven't won the domestic cups in quite a while now so it looks silly to be like Everton and treat them as an irrelevance. We last won the League Cup in 2012, and last contested the final in 2016. We last won the FA Cup in 2006, and last contested the final in 2012. Those competitions have been taking a back seat at Liverpool for years, and we've seen very little tangible success for it.

I’d like to see us compete in these competitions. Probably with a rotated team. That doesn’t mean a different eleven, it means intermittently rest different players for different games. We needed to invest in the squad for this though.

Winning the domestic cups cups has value for the fans.

Think Trumo has a good point not to think of the League Cup  & FA Cup under basically the same umbrella  , with the LC mostly before Xmas when we are most stretched, and the FA Cup more important traditionally and starting when we are in a bit better a position.

Hopefully we will not be as unlucky in the draws as well this year which would give us a bit more leeway.

I just see photos of that Champions Wall at Melwood and want to see the league column hit 20, the domestic cups hit double figures and the European trophy haul surpass 10 in total aswell. In each case, we are basically just a couple of wins shy of achieving that, and we have players capable of achieving it.

We don't need to play a load of kids to rotate a bit in the early round of the cups as the squad is quite deep in most positions. A team based around Matip, Lovren, Hoeve, Milner, Keita, Ox, Shak, Origi, Lallana should be good enough to beat most opposition and I expect that group may well need the games.

Agreed, especially as I'm not expecting much in the league this year (usual post-title challenge slump). I'd have a good go at the League Cup early rounds and review around Christmas. If we're still up there in the league then don't push too hard in the League Cup. If we've died on our arse in the league it's time to aim for the cups.

They're like two fat birds on the edge of the dance-floor at Secrets(insert other similarly trampy club), that you've been swerving all night because there are a couple of more nicer, fitter, more appealing catches out on the dance floor and around the bar, but after a night of trying and failing and showing your best moves, you realise your only hope is the two tonnes of womanly wrongness thrusting on the edge of the dance floor. However, its only just 11 O'clock you've only just arrived at Secrets and the night and season, are still young, so set those sites high and rage, rage not into the night of womanly wrongness, but into the vagina of champions glory.

The lads looked a bit goosed in that second half.  There’s been plenty of cry arsing about winning the domestic cups but it should be as clear as day now that we play a complete second string in both of them. 6 wins out of 6 in the league.  Up the unbearables.

This x 1000

Been saying this for the last 2 seasons. If we're serious about winning the league, we need to jib the domestic cups.

By jib them, I dont mean deliberately go out to lose in them. It means we play the players in the first team squad who arent getting league games and the best U23 players.

It would be nice to get a couple of rounds deep for a change, not out of pride or anything because I couldn't give a shit about them, especially seeing as it annoys city fans that we have zero respect for their domestic treble.

I'd just like to get the second string with a few games under their belts, gain some match fitness/experience, let them show they deserve some big match starts, it can only be a good thing.

This is an incredible attack against the integrity of FSG.

John Henry has a strong slander case, here. The very idea he wouldn't care about winning a trophy is too ridiculous to refute.
