The people lobbing that racist shit probably already held racist views and opinions or are simply too stupid and ignorant to know otherwise. While they should be held accountable for holding such views, there is no doubt that racist and right-wing rhetoric has been stirred up and allowed to re-enter mainstream thinking globally, empowering a lot of people to be much more open about holding such views.

 

John Barnes was right in saying that educating society is the way to educate against discrimination. Unfortunately, many people are being educated to be pro-discrimination. Social media just lets them air their ignorance unfiltered, unedited and largely unchecked. Hatred is a vote winner at the moment.

I am not sure that the current climate has created many new individual racists. Some, maybe - a glut, no.
