Loan Watch 2019/20

As expected, Nat Phillips is heading back to Stuttgart on loan for the second half of the season.

I really like the idea of our younger players going out on loan to German sides, coming back during their Winter break, and then heading back out to the same club for the remainder of the season.

A quick overview of the weekends activity, of wildly varying levels of interest...

Harry Wilson : Started for Bournemouth in their humiliating 3-0 home defeat by Watford; his first-half free-kick, on target from 35 yards out, might have been the highlight of the home teams display. Got knocked over a lot. Subbed off with fifteen minutes left; "having a precautionary scan on his left shoulder Tuesday" is the rumour. Bournemouth are now looking in no little difficulty hanging round the trapdoor; would the parachute payments cover his price tag? All will be revealed.

Kamil Grabara : Another defeat for Huddersfield, this time 2-1 at Barnsley. Should have done better with the cross for the first goal. A winter of long shadows and high hopes in West Yorkshire continues.

Herbie Kane : No fun in East Yorkshire either, as Hull went down 1-0 at home to Fulham. Kane didn't play badly, but the forwards did nothing with what was provided. Still only three points off the playoff places. Sooner them coming back up than Wednesday. Or Millwall.

Rhian Brewster : Made his loan debut for Swansea at Cardiff, and played the full game. Got the sort of early booking that forwards get in derby games. Will look better once his team-mates get some idea of what he can (and can't, some say won't) do.

Isaac Christie-Davies : Made his initial appearance for Cercle Brugge off the bench in a friendly against Augsburg in Malta, scoring their second goal in the 3-3 draw. The Belgian league resumes next weekend, and Cercle are 16th... out of 16 teams. He might get to play regularly, unlike...

Sheyi Ojo : Rangers used the mid-season break to head off to Dubai, and played a friendly against the might of Uzbek Super League runners-up Lokomotiv Tashkent, in which the plucky Scots underdogs came out on top by six goals to one. Ojo played the first half, created the opening goal by crossing for septuagenarian Jermaine Defoe to tap in, and then added the second himself, before heading for the bench to watch Ryan Kent play the rest of the game. The path of the rest of his season remains unclear.

Taiwo Awoniyi : Mainz played two friendlies in the last week, a loss to Dutch club Emmen (where 23 players were used) and a win over a below-full-strength Borussia Dortmund (using 21 players). Awoniyi was named as a sub in both games without being asked to take the field. Quite what anyone is getting out of this deal is beyond my tiny intellect.

Do we have actual updates, about actual players, on actual loans? Actually, we do...

Harry Wilson : Started for Bournemouth in their bottom-of-the-table clash at Norwich. Subbed off ten minutes before half time, sacrificed after Simon Cook was rewarded for his instinctive fingertip save with an early bath, and the resulting penalty was converted for the 1-0 final score.
Kamil Grabara : Kept a valuable clean sheet for Huddersfield in their goalless draw at home to Brentford. Not the busiest day for the big Pole in goal.
Herbie Kane : Played the full 90 minutes in the 1-0 defeat at Hull. Once again, created chances that were not converted; one first-half cross to Bowen in particular should have led to a goal. Also had a shot on goal late in the second half that required a good block. In short: not his fault.
Rian Brewster : Made his first home appearance for Swansea against Wigan, scoring their first goal in the 2-1 win when running onto a through ball on the left side of the area and finishing from 15 yards into the opposite corner of the goal. Subbed off with five minutes left. Job done.
Sheyi Ojo : Came off the bench for 25 minutes in the Scottish Cup tie at home to Stranraer, by which time Rangers were 2-0 up and their opponents had run themselves to a standstill. Had a goal ruled out for offside, probably incorrectly.
Isaac Christie-Davies : Missed out on making a debut for Cercle Brugge with what their website called a ‘knee problem’.
Taiwo Awoniyi : Not in the match day squad for Mainz against Freiburg, after failing to appear in either friendly game during the club’s winter break in Spain.
Loris Karius : It can’t be hidden that this has been a bad week for the German. Besiktas lost the first leg of their last-16 cup tie 3-2 at Erzurum, and followed that with a 2-1 home defeat to league leaders Sivasspor, leaving them in seventh, ten points off the top. Consequently the chatter about a permanent move during this window has subsided; you can’t have everything.

My Mrs hates any mention of Stranraer on the tv , as I always launch into my best Brian Potter

' Stranraer, Stranraer …. in Scotland ? , You're killing me '

at the top of my voice.

Now with @“0 % fewer typos...

Harry Wilson : Started the home league game with Brighton, and got the scoring started in the 3-1 win from 15 yards out when Chelsea legend Dominic Solanke found him in way-too-much space. Not so much fun in the 2-1 FA Cup defeat at home to Arsenal; he had their first shot on goal, a well-placed volley that needed a good save at the near post - but that was in the 36th minute, by which time they were already two goals down. A couple of decent crosses that deserved better. Subbed off after 75 minutes. Now they can concentrate on the league, etc.

Loris Karius : Started with more misery in the cup, as Besiktas lost the second leg of their cup tie with Erzurum 3-2, going out 6-4 on aggregate - now they can concentrate on the league, etc. Then on Sunday Besiktas lost again in said league, 2-1 at Goztepe. They’re now eleven points off leaders Sivasspor with just fifteen games left, and seven off second place, with that Champions League qualifying opportunity.

Sheyi Ojo : Got ten minutes off the bench against St. Mirren. Had a couple of shots blocked, and might have had an assist if Grandpa Defoe hadn’t dozed off in the six-yard box. Then on Sunday he got 20 minutes off the bench in the surprise 2-1 loss at Hearts; squandered a good counterattack when the scores were still level.

Marko Grujic : Played the full game as Hertha came from behind to win 2-1 at Wolfsburg. Barely touched the ball in the first half, seemingly positioned as the furthest-forward of five midfielders, and wasn’t heavily involved defensively either, other than regularly blocking off opponents at set-pieces. Got on the ball a bit more in the second half, but his only significant effort was to scoop the ball back into the area from the right flank in stoppage time, resulting eventually in a free header from Lukebakio finding the net for the winner. No style points, but Hertha are now five points clear of the bottom three..

Herbie Kane : Played 90 minutes in the FA cup defeat by Chelsea. It would not be inaccurate to say that he failed to impose himself on the game, although that can be partly attributable to McCann bravely going with the 4-3-3. Now they can concentrate, etc.

Rhian Brewster : Swansea are already having to concentrate on the league, and Brewster played 90 minutes in the 2-0 defeat at Stoke. Barely had a sniff. Not sure all of his teammates want to pass to him either.

Isaac Christie-Davies : Still injured, apparently.
Taiwo Awoniyi : Still alive, apparently.

Dan Atherton : Made his debut for Marine in the 2-2 draw with Brighouse Town. “Could have done better” on the first goal - parried a free kick straight back to an opposition player, who had a tap-in. “Definitely at fault” for the second, coming out for a ball and not getting it. Apparently just moving a goalkeeper away from Achterberg is not enough to make him Gordon Banks reincarnate.

Stuff I cajoled from the ether while waiting for Critch to come before the cameras and genially evade questions...

Kamil Grabara : Started against Hull. Appeared to have been impeded by an opponent at a corner while one of his defenders assisted the ball over (as in, millimetres over) the line to level the scores at 1-1. Subsequently knocked unconscious in a collision with another of his teammates, and was on his way to hospital when Huddersfield won the game 2-1. Spent two nights in Hull Royal Infirmary. He’ll have more neurological scans now he’s been discharged; Danny Cowley expects him to be out for ‘at the absolute minimum, four weeks’.

Herbie Kane : Played the full 90 minutes against Huddersfield. Had less impact on the game than he’d have liked. Dropped to the bench for the home game with Brentford; by the time he got on, with 23 minutes to play, Hull trailed 4-1.  Had no effect on the match. He’s better than this, obviously, but with Hull having sold two forwards at the deadline, it might be a while before a coherent team shape emerges.

Rhian Brewster : Started the game at Preston. Got the first-half equaliser from close range with some part of his anatomy after a cross from the right (see above). Got a booking in the second half for a “classic forwards tackle”; apparently you need a bit of that - and might have got a second one for a bit of a dive just outside the box not long afterwards, but the ref decided he wasn’t “that sort of player”. Subbed off at the end. A job well done.

Marko Grujic Started the home game with Schalke, which ended scoreless, again as the most advanced of the five midfielders. Lasted just over an hour before being replaced by new signing Piatek. It remains to be seen what formation will make best use of the new signings, and whether Grujic is part of it.

Nat Phillips : Returned to Stuttgart after his FA Cup cameo, and played the full game in both their 3-0 home win over Heidenheim, and then the 1-1 draw at St. Pauli that leaves the club just three points behind surprise leaders Bielefeld.

Sheyi Ojo : Played a rare full game against Ross County and started the move that led to Rangers second goal. Dropped back to the bench for the scoreless home draw with Aberdeen, getting 25 minutes as Rangers vainly chased the game. So much for my idea that Ojo might well get more time on the pitch from the injury to Defoe.

Loris Karius : Besiktas finally pulled themselves out of their sloth at the weekend, winning 2-1 at Rizespor. Still seventh, but only eight points off the top.

Harry Wilson : Played 90 minutes in the priceless 2-1 win over Villa. Took the (admittedly dreadful) free kick that led, eventually, to Aké scoring their second. Not as involved in the second half, especially after Lerma got a second yellow, but did create a late counterattack which should have resulted in a third goal.

Dan Atherton : A clean sheet as Marine triumphed over the might of Ossett United, 1-0. Play-off push back on track - this time next year they could be playing the likes of Kidderminster Harriers. Speaking of which...

Rhys Williams : Back with Kidderminster Harriers after serving his three-match ban, played the full game as the Harriers enjoyed a rare away win, 2-0 at King’s Lynn. He’s better than this level - he’s better than some of the players in the squad for Tuesday night - and hopefully whatever lesson this loan is intended to teach him will hit home.

How many of these games are you watching Alles?

Cheers for all the updates, much appreciated!

Well I’m not usually at the Kidderminster games; someone else watches Marine for me, in return for beer tokens; the Turkish stuff is hearsay. Generally I can get hold of everything else. At some point Anderson Arroyo will start playing for Mlada Boleslav, and that will have to be sourced.
