As they arrived at Anfield, they'd sealed the league title days earlier, were in the Copa Del Rey final and had a 3-goal lead against an undermanned Liverpool. They even had the luxury of resting their entire first XI in preparation for that semifinal.

What happened that night shouldn't distract from the fact they were considered hot favorites for the treble all of a year ago.

Yes it should. The Nou Camp result itself was very much against the run of play. We should never, ever have found ourselves 3 down after that first leg. It was not at all representative of how that game played out.

Both Spanish clubs have been shown that slow midfielders might be OK in la liga but they'll get exposed at the very top level

This happened a couple times last decade when Madrid and Barcelona got old and the German teams caught lightening in a bottle. It's not necessarily slow midfields, Madrid and Barcelona are just old and shite. Literally can't run anymore.

Barcelona had Roberto and Vidal, two donkeys. They're just shite.

I have seen Mane, Salah, Firmino all tracking back defending and working for cause. Didn't see that work ethic in Barcelona tonight. "None for all but all for me" kinda mentality.

Football is always a game of styles. I know next to nothing of Lyon except a few players, but a side like Wolves will give City more of a game than Barcelona due to the way each side plays. If Lyon have a number of athletic players like Depay across the team then they may give City a decent challenge. Bayern's style seems like kryptonite to City, however the Lyon game goes. Personally I don't think any team other than Atletico would have knocked us out of this competition (they never should have, either).

I agree with you 100% on that. But it doesn't really change my point.

You're mistaking mentality for physical capabilities. Luis Suarez hasn't been in Sadio Mane's shape for going on 5 years now.

They do, their side is filled with athletes. They regularly give PSG a hard time and beat City last season.

That was Germany v Brazil from the 2014 World Cup. An embarrassing shambles from Barcelona, and total ruthlessness from Bayern. Neuer, Boateng and Muller played in both games.

To try and counter Bayern, you need a bit of pace and mobility in the attacking third, but Barcelona are lumbered with guys who all want the ball to feet, and the pressing game that Barcelona and Spain were renowned for a decade ago is not there anymore. Setien was always a lame-duck coach but he looked completely devoid of influence out there - it's clear that they don't want to listen to him. They are a mess on the pitch despite the quality they still have to call upon because it's all disjointed, and they are a mess off the pitch too because they are haemorrhaging cash thanks to handing out ridiculous transfer fees and contracts. Messi needs to consider his future, and recognise that he can't expect the sort of contract he is currently on because it will stifle any club's ability to build a strong unit around him, and he can't expect the sort of behind-the-scenes influence he has been indulged with. Both are a hindrance rather than a help.

Bayern actually look a more complete side than us at present. Not absolutely rock solid at the back but competent enough to not get picked apart. Plenty of mobility, control and aggression in midfield. Plenty of pace and width. Absolute dynamite in attack with a striker in the form of his life. And they have more strength in depth when you consider that guys like Martinez and Pavard weren't even involved, expensive signings like Hernandez and expensive loans like Coutinho are usually only on the bench, and they have new signings like Sane yet to be involved.

We broke them that night and you love to see it.

Sid knows.

Quote

“For Barcelona, every stadium is Anfield now,” wrote Santi Giménez. “They are a drama of epic proportions, where anyone can strip them bare with startling ease.” Something broke that night. Or maybe it’s more accurate to suggest that something was revealed, and has not been remedied.

How many of their players get into our 11? Maybe 4, tops 5. And 1 of those we'll hopefully be poaching. We should be better all over the pitch other than centre forward & possibly midfield, but that is debatable. They didn't make us break a sweat last season.
