Klopp: Lallana can adapt to new midfield role

Jurgen Klopp has once again discussed the possibility of Adam Lallana moving into the No. 6 role after being impressed with his performances in the position so far in the pre-season.

Klopp is a unabashed fan of Lallana, and once again waxed lyrical over the credentials of the 31 year-old when speaking on the U.S tour.

The Official site reported Klopp as saying:

" You see the sessions here, what a footballer he is, it’s incredible.

" Still it feels like people say, ‘He was injured, he was injured’ – yes, but in the moment he is not.

" I had, for example, Ilkay Gundogan, who was twice, if not three times, really seriously injured (at Dortmund) and now for one or two years he is playing completely without any injury.

"So just no pressure, no rush, build up, really build a fitness level, work with the experience you made in the situations. And then everything will be fine.

Klopp said while the move is certainly not set in stone especially as pre-season is the time to experiment,  he says Lallana's performances point to the fact of his overall adaptability.

" Football-wise, there is absolutely no doubt about Adam.

" In the moment he plays a slightly different position, he enjoys it.

"He’s not now fixed in the No.6 position; we have players who played that position before and played it really well.

" But Adam is a midfielder through and through and he is an outstanding player.

"Outstanding players, you always try to find the best position on the pitch and in some games it’s possible the best position for Adam Lallana is the No.6 It must be a very dominant game, by the way, but he can play."

The comments by Klopp on Lallana will certainly spark some discussion, but agree with him or not on this issue, it is another example of the wholehearted support that the manager gives his players.

It is certainly one of his many outstanding qualities as a manager.

He will be out for 75 percent of the season.

That would be a massive improvement over the last two seasons. Can't see it.

I'm really struggling to see Lallana as a DM. He is a dribbler and a player who likes to take risk one on one. A creative player, who at his best can be quite productive in the final third. But his style of play, and his lack of physical presence, means that he regularly gives the ball away. Which is the last thing you need as a DM.

Probably not a very important discussion though, as he'll be injured most of the time anyway.

I think it makes sense at this stage in his career. He's good on the turn and press resistant which are great for the deeper role and he probably doesn't have the legs to play up the pitch anymore. I think it's a good way to use his qualities as he gets older. I don't know where your assertion that he gives it away comes from. His touch and ball conservation has always been quite good.

He won't be a DM. His job won't be to tackle anyone.

His sole job will be to distribute the ball, which is why Klopp highlighted "It must be a very dominant game, by the way, but he can play".

See, he never gives the ball away easily.  And he wins the ball often. And he's calm under pressure, which is something we didn't have until Fabinho arrived.  Lallana's a far better player than most on here understand, or are able to admit.

I honestly don't have the slightest clue how good or bad Lallana is. He's spent the last few years either injured, or recently recovered from injury. By the time he has shaken the rust off and is gaining some form he's injured again.

Maybe Klopp has a sixth sense about these things, which is why he identified Brewster as having a vital role despite spending all of last season injured.
