Storyville: Barca - The Inside Story

From back when they had a bit of class and humility, this brilliant documentary shows Juan Laporta taking over as president and trying to pull the club back from the brink of financial crisis while winning on the pitch. It’s one of the best “behind the scenes” documentaries ever.

I enjoyed that one too.

I have this and absolutely love it, mainly as it has a LOT of focus on the early days when even factory teams were a little bit amateurish and the sport was actually, you know, a sport.

It also has some extras with Alex Zanardi which I love as he's absolutely ace.

There was also a really good BBC documentary with him a couple of years afterwards as well. He's a very wonderful human being in my opinion.

Saw some saloon car racing on the FreeSports channel on sky the other day which was very reminiscent of the Saturday afternoon Granstand slot where it was part on track and part off track, with loads of mud and a few obstacles. You know where the convert the centre of the track into off road type of thing? Old Escorts,Fiestas etc and was much more entertaining than most of the mainstream modern stuff.

That would be some rallycross, they started an historic class a few years ago. You can get brand new Escort Mk2 body shells now, if I had the cash I'd be looking at building a historic to try and run in that. But I'll have to stick to modern BMWs for now as they are a bit more cost effective.

The combination of the loss of grandstand and then the rise of F1 under Bernie really hit everything else. For me the chase the other categories went into for the TV cash was a huge error and saw to lots of it disappearing from people minds and I think things might never come back.

The British Touring Car Championship is a fucking farce as far as I am concerned now, the cars are very well engineered in comparison to the cars of the past but they just don't have that level of spectacle. Never mind the driving standards, I think they just let those go as without the accidents then they have no show. However, they carry out manoeuvres that would see anyone at club level in saloon cars or karts facing a ban. Although I'd be interested to see how rb14 views that as he's a circuit man whereas I spent most of my time in the woods and country lanes bouncing of trees and walls.

Rouse and Soper showing how it should be done.

Close racing, but showing each other respect and actually driving around each other. That's racing, not just banger racing like it's turned into now.

The historic seen is the only aspect that seems to be thriving, the downside of that is that costs are really high for it. Although you will always have some resale value in your car and it will remain eligible and competitive.

I could go on for hours on this, I've had many a discussion trying to argue that rallying and rallycross need to rethink and try to do something different to generate some interest. But the old guard just don't seem to want to listen to a lot of it.

When was the last time anyone heard about rallying head something about the sport in the news? Other than when the shit rags get hold of it because of the very rare bad accidents that have occurred when they take the opportunity to very badly report things, a friend of mine was navigating several years ago on a rally where someone was killed, a photo of their car was shown on the front page of the Scottish rag with sponsors on display and a headline like "Rally Car kills spectator", except it wasn't their car who hit them.

The Motorsports Association has a new chairman who is saying a lot of the right things about doing things to help club level. Time will tell on that one.

On a lighter note, I've been talking to some of the kids at Uni as obviously I've seen the group B cars (the Quattro's and Metro V6s etc.) in the flesh when I was a kid. The videos on youtube get some of the effect of those cars across.

But they don't capture how the ground shook as they went past and just how insane they seemed. Most of them don't believe me when I say you could hear them from several miles away through almost the entirety of the stage at some times.

Video games should be a way to get interest back as there are still loads of racing games with classic cars in. Dirt rally, forza, project cars etc. The interest is there.

I agree 100 percent.

I keep advocating that the likes of the British Rallycross Championship approach Codemasters and just give them the rights to the championship. But with clear caveats that when they have the daily and weekly events they have in game on Dirt that Codemasters also push that with info about the actual event.

Essentially a mutually beneficial event that costs almost nothing for those involved and can be used for promotion both ways.

When I was still out regularly I'd have been delighted with the idea that I could tell a sponsor my car is in a game that sells hundreds of thousands of copies.

I remember being on one of the biggest UK rally forums years ago and myself and one of the other younger people were taking about how the likes of Twitter and YouTube would be great for publicising events and generating interest. We got told they would never be successful.

Tell that to Ken Block!

There was a excellent channel 4 doc on the match fixing scandal in Italy. Never been able to find it again though.

Winning Time is good, look back on the rivalry between the New York Knicks and Indiana Pacer(well really Reggie Miller)

4 Days in October

The Red Sox and Yankees series

Most of the ESPN 30 for 30 docs have been brilliant

ESPN series was excellent.

Two Brothers especially and the one with Allen Iverson.

Also the two hour docs on Michigan University basketball The Fab Five and Catching Hell (The Steve Bartman incident where he interferes with a foul  ball and took the blame for the Chicago Cubs collapsing in 2002 I think it was).
