TAUNTS SPARK CHAOS AT DEN Millwall... 0 Liverpool... 3

By Neil Mcleman

LIVERPOOL'S League Cup win at the New Den was marred by crowd trouble last night after Millwall fans taunted the visitors over Hillsborough.

Riot police with batons had to intervene to contain furious Liverpool fans in the North Stand as they tried to rush the home crowd.

Two Liverpool fans were arrested in scenes covered live by Sky Sports TV.

Ninety-six Liverpool fans were killed at Hillsborough in 1989 at an FA Cup semi-final against Nottingham Forest.

The Millwall taunting late in this defeat first caused Liverpool fans to respond by throwing coins and at least one chair. Police then had to retire to don full riot gear before returning to quell the situation.

One disabled Liverpool fan in a wheelchair was knocked to the ground in the disturbance.

Liverpool legend Phil Neal, now a co-ordinator for the Hillsborough charity, was shocked by the scenes as he commentated for local station Radio City. "I just want to forget the bad experience," he said. "I just wanted to see Liverpool playing Millwall in normal circumstances.

"If that is what started it, it is totally unnecessary. I had to apologise to the listeners because I stopped talking for 20 minutes."

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez said: "You never want to see things like that. All you want to see is good football."

Millwall manager Dennis Wise said: "That wasn't our fans. It was Liverpool fans. That is down to them."

Dozens of seats in the North Stand were ripped out, two Liverpool fans were arrested and three were ejected from the ground. Two Millwall fans were arrested and one ejected.

The game itself was far simpler for Liverpool.

Milan Baros kept his cool amid the trouble, coming off the bench to score twice.

His two strikes - in the 70th minute and second-half injury time - sealed the win after Salif Diao's first goal for two years gave a Liverpool reserve side an early lead.

The Senagalese midfielder was one of 10 changes made from the weekend Premiership win over Charlton, with only Djimi Traore remaining at left-back.

And manager Benitez was satisfied his gamble of playing so many youngsters amid the madness of the New Den had paid off as they chase a record eighth League Cup.

"We kept the ball and we kept calm and that is important in that kind of game," said the Spaniard. "We kept control.

"It is important to have good players and good forwards like Baros. But if we don't have a good team for 70 minutes than he cannot do what he did tonight."

Baros, a 51st-minute sub for the injured Florent Sinama Pongolle, got his first goal when Stephen Warnock fed a loose ball sideways and Baros jinked his way into the box before slotting calmly home.

Then, in injury time, Baros latched on to a ball from Darren Potter to ram home a shot from the edge of the box.

Diao had broken the deadlock after 18 minutes when he gave a rare glimpse of the talent which persuaded Gerard Houllier to pay £5million for him after the last World Cup.

From a Warnock corner, the ball was headed across goal and Diao drilled home a half-volley from the penalty spot.MILLWALL: Stack, Muscat, Ward, Lawrence, Livermore, Dunne (Healy 79), Elliott, Morris, Serioux (McCammon 77), Tessem, Harris.

LIVERPOOL: Dudek, Josemi, Henchoz, Traore, Whitbread, Potter, Biscan, Diao, Warnock (Riise 81), Mellor (Finnan 65), Sinama Pongolle (Baros 52).
