Klopp: We are so happy for Ox

Liverpool reclaimed the lead atop the Premier League table with a commanding 5-0 victory over Huddersfield at Anfield on Friday night.

The superb all-round performance was just one high point on the evening, the other cause for great celebration was the return to senior football by Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

It had been almost a year to the day since the 25 year-old made his last competitive appearance for the Reds in the first leg of the semi final Champions League clash against AS Roma.

Oxlade-Chamberlain was coming into his own at the time of his untimely knee ligament injury in filling the sizeable void left by Philippe Coutinho who had departed for Barcelona mid season.

While the team have produced many fine performances this season, the creativity of the 'Ox' has been keenly felt in the middle part of the pitch.

The return of Oxlade-Chamberlain was greeted by rapturous cheers when he replaced Daniel Sturridge for the last 20 minutes of action.

And judging by his performance, he hasn't missed a beat.

Jurgen Klopp was delighted with having the No 21 back in action.

Sky Sports reported Klopp as saying:

"It's so good. Seeing the smile after he missed the chance was nearly heartbreaking.

"He's such a wonderful person. He's a better person than player - imagine that! He's a really good player and as a guy he's outstanding. We're so happy for him.

The German compared the Oxlade-Chamberlain situation with another quality player at Man City who has had plenty of injury setbacks of his own.

"You saw with Kevin De Bruyne this year. What a player he is. But he came from a long injury and you bring him back because he trains good, but the intensity of the league is nearly too much with game after game after game.

"It's similar for Ox. We have to manage it really carefully.

"You see him in training and everyone's overly excited. Now he's back and we start using him from time to time, it was the perfect game for him."

Andy Robertson believed that even though the game was well in hand, the arrival of Oxlade-Chamberlain gave the players a real boost.

"The whole stadium had a lift when he came on and we all found an extra gear.

'Like a new signing' is a well known football phrase. Alex's role will be restricted to cameo appearances for the remainder of this season.

But on the grander scale of things, just having him part of the first team set-up can only do wonders as the squad aim to add some prestigious silverware to the trophy cabinet.

Nice to pick out this bit of last night for an article!

I posted this in the Oxo-Chambo thread but will stick it here too...

...the way Kloppo reacted about Oxo-Chambo was a thing of beauty.

It reflected the powerful team spirit that we have here. But more than than that it was the human side of it that was so brilliant. In a world where footballers are commodities add statistics he talked of the person over the player. Was ace!
