Bayern Munich (A) Champions League 13/3/19

Steve Nicol thinks Liverpool were “atrocious” in their 3-1 victory over Bayern Munich in the second leg of their Champions League last-16 tie.

After five successive European defeats away from Anfield, Jurgen Klopp’s side – losing finalists last season – came good when it mattered to beat the German champions in the Allianz Arena to secure a place in the last eight.

Sadio Mane’s brilliant opener was cancelled out by Joel Matip’s own goal before half-time but Virgil Van Dijk’s first Champions League goal for the club meant Bayern then had to score two more. Mane converted a far-post diving header late on.

Despite the positive result, former Reds defender Nicol thought Liverpool‘s play on the ball was “as bad as I’ve ever seen.”

“I would love to say that Liverpool came and were just too clever and sat in a great spot,” Nicol, who played 343 league matches for Liverpool, said on ESPN FC.

“But the truth is that I don’t think Bayern knew what they wanted to do.

“Clearly in the first leg they sat and gave nothing away.

“But at home, and the reason we all thought they were favourites, you’d expect them to be pushing again, but they didn’t. They didn’t go forward, they just sort of sat and waited.

“If you look at the stats, the only reason they had more possession was because Liverpool kept giving them the ball.

“That had nothing to do with what they were doing.

“Liverpool on the ball in this game overall, I thought they were atrocious.

“I thought they were as bad as I’ve ever seen.

“But it goes to show you stats don’t mean anything, and the only thing that matters is the scoreline, and Liverpool won 3-1.”

Not my words, the words of Top Gear Magazine.

We're a wonderful team and after so long without trophies, we just need to win in any way possible. However, there's no doubt we were better to watch in Klopp's previous seasons. Hopefully we win the double and add a world class playmaker to the mix. Klopp can't be criticised seriously of course, but it would be nice to understand his more pragmatic turn.

Can anything happen to Martinez for that dirty stamp on Gini? As in, does the option of VAR now count as the officials having 'dealt' with the incident?

Still wondering why the Salah peno shout wasn't referred either. Clearly clipped.

It was a rather bizarre game I thought. First half, I thought both teams were actually playing quite well, but cancelling each other out. Our goal was frankly, world class. Mane is superb. Their goal was avoidble from out point of view, but I'd give a bit of credit to their winger for making the most of it & putting a dangerous ball across the goal, which would have gone to their striker if Matip hadn't got there first.

The second half was a different beast altogether. I thought he quality dropped massively for both teams. Passes going astray all over the place, from seemingly everyone. Then VVD popped up on a corner, and then we settled a bit before adding a super third.

I can see why people thought we didn't play well, but the three goals we scored were excellent, the defending was in the round, pretty great, but the fluidity wasn't quite there. If it had, I think we'd have battered them 4 or 5.

Aesthetically Liverpool are terrible to watch. Shankly's piano analogy has never been more apt.

i'd argue it's more about the shithouse opposition tactics we are forced to endure, especially lately. if someone wants to play, we'll play as well as anyone else

Exactly.  You can't play swashbuckling football against a side with ten men behind the ball in their own half.

Only seems to get used to disallow goals to be honest.

The modern football fan. All stats and hats and no fucking clue.

'What a terrible 3-1 away win here in Switzerland in the European Cup Quarter final second leg. The Reds form is quite concerning and their 15 point lead at the top of the table will soon turn into a fight for fourth on this display!' Said Peter Jones never.

Stopped right there.   I was sad to see what he's become on ESPN.   Comes across like a right gobshite, probably an act.   The yanks love that shit.

Genuinely couldn't believe it when I seen how he acted on there.

The 2nd half was a classic Liverpool in their heyday away European performance - the great sides of the 70's and 80's specialised in those sort of performances.

It was fucking great to watch.

It isn't always about swashbuckling/flowing football.
