Is football dying

It's not dying, it's changing into something new, and while that's not always a bad thing - the display of scumbaggery we saw at St Andrews yesterday was far more frequent back in the day - I'm finding it increasingly easy to ignore it. Part of that is getting older. I remember a local who, when asked who he supported, describing himself as "Liverpool - retired". I thought that was a very strange attitude to have, but 15 years on I can relate to it more. A few weeks back I went to a hurling match in Dublin. Waterford lost, missing a last-minute penalty that would have won them the game, but I was almost indifferent to the result. I only paid €15 for the ticket and I was able to sit down next to my siblings at the game, the entirety of which we spent taking the piss out of each other. There isn't an outlet for this kind of thing any more in football, or at least not following Liverpool*. Bringing my 5-year-old son to Anfield is going to be like a military operation, and I don't mean getting to Liverpool, that's the easy part. Getting tickets is going to have to be planned months in advance. It's a chore, and with an uncertain payoff. The more I think about it, it's not football that's dying - it's me.

*And yes, I'm fully aware I'm part of the problem. I've decided I'm not going to Anfield any more, but there are literally millions of people behind me only too eager to take my place in the pecking order. If I/they stuck to supporting their local team, things would be very different.

We're in the footballing Dark ages, for sure. From Spain/Barcelona dominating with a cultured, slow buildup to Real Madrid winning 4 of the last 5 European cups. Sides like us and Atletico being very strong, France winning the World Cup, Guardiola going to a soulless club like Man City. Football's lost a bit of the romance and Corinthian spirit.
