Van Dijk: Everton celebrations spoke volumes

Virgil Van Dijk has told his teammates to put the disappointment of the 0-0 draw in the Merseyside Derby quickly behind them as they look to regain the initiative in the title race.

The stalemate at Goodison Park sees Liverpool trail Man City by a point with both teams having nine games to play.

The Dutchman marshalled the defence with his usual aplomb, clearing the ball 13 times and making three timely interceptions.

 

Van Dijk did not give the likes of Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Gylfi Sigurdsson a sniff throughout the ninety minutes and his performance earned him yet another Man of the match award.

Van Dijk who said he enjoyed the competitive nature of the contest, was certainly disappointed not to pick up the three points.

The Mirror reported Van Dijk as saying:

"We came here for three points and did not get them. Yes of course (we are disappointed)". 

 

 

Van Dijk was particularly surprised with the response of the home fans at the final whistle which was one of great celebration, and also included a ball boy taunting manager Jurgen Klopp after the German applauded the visiting fans.

"We deserved the three points and it says a lot that they are celebrating a 0-0. We had chances to win the game."
 

The central defender implored his teammates to recover and be ready for the challenge of Burnley who are sure to come to Anfield with a gameplan based on frustrating the Reds.

The main message is about treating each game on its merits and not to focus purely on the league table.
 

"We focus on our next game, everyone wants to be top of the league and we cannot change the situation at the moment."

He's an absolute colossus. I loved big Sami and Jockey Hansen but VVD is absolutely incredible. Probably doesn't have Jockey's flair but is the best defender I've seen for a long time. Absolutely imperious.
