Granby Street Project Winter Garden

Just thought I'd share this with those of you who are local.  I am part of what might best be described as  steering group for Homebaked Community Land Trust, with regards to the feasibility of taking over and turning the row of houses nest to the bakery into affordable social housing, community space, and some commercial units.

On Staurday, we went on some site visits around the North West to look at some other community projects that are in advanced or completed stages - one of which was the Granby Street Project which is four streets off Granby Street in Toxteth, which are being converted into social housing.

Two of the houses in one of the streets were incapable of being made habitable, so instead they've turned them into a Winter Garden which isn't quite finished.  One half is the garden space, and the other a community space which has been used a few times as a local pop-up cinema, for kids to do homework, and for kids to do crafting (to contribute to the lantern festival in Sefton Park later in the month. Eventually, they'll also use it for art exhibitions etc. It's not quite finished but it's absolutely superb, and will be a great space for the community to have a bit of time out.  When the sun shines through the roof on the chandelier, it casts coloured light on the wall. This is the garden half.

How are the commercial units going to fit in ? Are these to be new build on the site of the old cafe, printers and Hillsborough shop ?

Those images are great. Just shows what can be created when those who live in the area have a say in on what goes on in the area.

It’s the houses to the left of the bakery. Likely that there will be a couple of commercial units at the far end towards the walkthrough to The Reck with flats above, and a mix of houses and flats in between.

189 Oakfield Rd has been fitted out as the CLTs headquarters and they are now inviting the public to drop-in sessions every Thursday between 3pm-6pm, and Friday 10am-1pm, up until 22nd March. These are for people locally to have a look at the plans, have a chat and give their input. A few doors down from the bakery. The plans aren’t the finalised plans but should be close.

It’s the Princess Av end of Granby Street between Ducie St and Beaconsfield St.

You can read more about it on this blog.

The Welsh Streets project was a private builder and, very nice though they may be, are not social housing. They’re privately rented at 33% above the market rate to compete with city centre apartments and the clientele they’re aiming for are junior doctors, etc.
